EFTICHIA STASSINOPOULOS Obituary

EFTICHIA STASSINOPOULOS
Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother Eftichia "Effie" Stassinopoulos passed away of natural causes on Wednesday, March 27, 2013, surrounded by her family in her Potomac home. Mrs. Stassinopoulos, who received her degrees in Archaeology and Philology from the University of Athens in 1948, was over 90 years old. During the Occupation of Greece in World War II, Effie served as a nurse and helped Allied soldiers to escape from or evade capture by Axis forces, for which she was honored by Field Marshal Alexander, Allied Supreme Commander of the Mediterranean Theatre. She became the Director of the Educational Department of the Athens YMCA in 1946, where she met her future husband, NASA Physicist, Dr. E.G. Stassinopoulos, whom she married in 1950. Effie, E.G., and their infant daughter Yolanda emigrated to Washington DC in 1954, where Effie became the Director of the Greek Language Schools for the District's St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral. For over 40 years, "Kyria" Effie led, mentored, and inspired the learning of Greek language and culture for institutions such as the Greek Embassy, Georgetown University, Howard University, and organizations such as AHEPA. Mrs. Stassinopoulos leaves behind her beloved husband, EG, of Potomac; her sister Antonia Pappaioannou of Athens, Greece, and her son-in-law Anastasios Chassiakos, her daughter Yolanda, and her grandchildren, Anastasia, George, and Alexander of Los Angeles. Theos Xorestin! A funeral service will be held at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 7701 Bradley Blvd., Bethesda, MD on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at 10 a.m. The interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville, MD.
