ELIZABETH BROWN Obituary

ELIZABETH ANN BROWN  (1918 - 2017)
Elizabeth Ann Brown passed away on March 7, 2017, in Washington, D.C. at the age of 98. She was born on August 15, 1918, in Portland, Oregon, to Edwin Keith and Grace Viola (Foss) Brown. Educated at Reed College, Washington State College, and Columbia University, she went on to a long and prolific career in the State Department, and in later years held senior positions in the U.S Embassies in Germany, Greece, and The Netherlands. In 1967 she was awarded the Federal Woman's award.Elizabeth retired from the State Department in 1979, and dedicated much of her time to charity work, to which she gave generously in a variety of ways. She was a world traveler and always enjoyed visiting distant and exotic countries with her friends. Elizabeth was devoted to her dogs and participated in organizations that promoted animal welfare. She spent the last few years at Sunrise on Connecticut Avenue, where she received exceptional care.Elizabeth gave of herself throughout her life, touching those she loved with her time and kindness. She is survived by her cousin, Laura Lively, and many close friends who loved her dearly and are pleased to have considered her family. Elizabeth was a woman of strength and integrity, a steady hand in tumultuous times, a giver, a lover of life, and a role model for all of us. She will be deeply missed, for in her passing she leaves an empty space, but we celebrate Elizabeth's life and know that we are all the richer for having been influenced by her love and friendship. No services planned.

My father used to tell me I was just like his cousin Elizabeth Ann Brown. That was a source of honor, pride and motivation. The few times we talked proved enriching and enlightening given her sense of history, hope for humanity and her kindness. I miss her. I offer condolences to all who also miss her.
