Elizabeth Martin Smith (Age 97)

Elizabeth M. Smith "Betty" transitioned peacefully on July 14, 2023. She was born to Effie and Napoleon Martin in Decherd, Tennessee and raised in Gary, West Virginia. She was baptized at an early age in the Gary Apostolic Temple. She left Gary for Washington, DC at the age of 18 and made the District her home for the next 79 years. Upon arriving in Washington, DC, she joined the Metropolitan Baptist Church where she met her future husband Davie E. Smith.



Elizabeth was, for many years, a member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church, serving in many groups including the Women's Club, Helping Hands Club, and Deaconess Board. She later joined the Emmanuel Baptist Church and became a hardworking committee and dedicated Women's Club member.



Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and a sister, and her beloved husband, Davie E. Smith, Sr. She is survived by her children, Davie, Jr. (Jon­ica), and Keith (Amy); and her siblings, Alice Martin, Fanny Martin Smith, McKinley Martin, and Pamela Butts; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.



A memorial service will be held 12 p.m. on Friday July 28, at Emmanuel Baptist Church Washington, DC, followed by internment at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.
