I will always remember you, Ellen. For your kindness, your wonderful sense of humor, your genuineness, and for your support of me at the Phillips Museum, and as an artist, and as a friend. I do miss you very much. Keep a chair warm for me because I know we will have a drink and some laughs when I next see you. With love, respect, and ongoing admiration. Claire.

Ellen and I shared an interest in and memories of living in the Finger Lakes region of New York state, where flinty individualism combined with native Iroquois spiritualism to form a bone-deep imperative to create harmony between the natural world and its creatures and the spirit world. The world of wolves and honey, as Susan Brind Morrow called it. As a clan mother to the disparate worlds only she could bring together, Ellen, as the Iroquois believe, is released from the strictures of the visible world, free to walk the Milky Way as a pure spirit of strength and goodness. Oh Beauty, you were called home far too soon, but we will see you in every moon rise, hear you in every robin's song, and feel you in every soft breeze that carries the promise of perpetual spring.

Ellen was a friend, a mentor, a guiding light, a fellow artist and a splendid fount of laughter. She was one classy lady and I am having a hard time imagining a world without her.
I am so grateful to have had her and Bob in my life from the first day I arrived in Lancaster through all those opening nights at the Fulton and all those late night drinks on the Groff patio. Rest in peace my friend. I miss you already.

I did not know Ellen well, but I do clearly remember her laugh and that she was extremely high spirited. The obituary shown here makes it clear that she was not just a wild card, but someone who channeled a great deal of energy into very positive areas. We've attended the Fulton Theater and greatly enjoyed the productions. I am certain Ellen will be sorely missed by not only her husband and immediate family, but by the whole community!

My cherished friend has left this world and moved beyond to the realm of spiritual perfection. She was a remarkably gifted individual who passionately believed in the power of the human spirit and the magnificence of the arts. She transformed the Lancaster community and empowered it through broad and sweeping activism. For her, all the world was a stage and she was quoted as saying, "I love the human experience of creating. I think that's what it's all about for me. I look at all those people on stage. They're pulling together, they're painting and making music together. That's what keeps me interested. And there's so few things we do together as human beings."

Ellen, I love you and will miss you terribly. The world is truly a better place because you journeyed through it. You were a pillar within your community, and now you are a pillar in the eternal temple of God. As you now rest from your labors, may the choirs of angels lead you into paradise, and may Christ who called you, take you home.
