I knew Ellen when she was a fund raiser for Georgetown (was it Day School or Prep? sorry I don't remember) and I was a fund raiser for The Chelsea School. I sought her counsel on numerous occasions and visited her office once. We shared a Lake Forest College connection, as I graduated from there (1968) and her daughter, Paula, had recently graduated (when we knew each other back in the 80's.) I hope I am remembering correctly that she was a fund raiser. Since it wasn't mentioned in the obituary, I'm not sure!

She was a lovely lady, and I'm grateful for all the work she did in Alexandria.

I feel as though I have lost a member of my family. In fact Mrs. Pickering (as my sibling and I called her throughout our childhood) was often my "after school mom". My mom worked (rare then) and I would often drop by "The Pickering's" after school to hang out with the kids (Frances, David, Paula and Duff) but sometimes just "Mrs.. Pickering". She would help me with my homework, or sometimes I sit on this tall chair in the kitchen as she prepared dinner and chat about (of course) current events, history (my favorite subject as a kid), and going ons with me. I was 7 or 8 years old when I first met her. After we moved from that Rosemont neighborhood to the Beverly Hills neighborhood and they moved a few blocks down in Rosemont, I lost touch with her and her family, including her husband, Harlan, a bear of a man, who also kind and wonderful. I was fortunate enough to be reunited with her when she won the election to become a city councilman (she refused to call her self a city "councilwoman" as popular in those "Woman's Lib" days, saying emphatically that it is a title, an historic one at that and not a "gender issue!"). She asked me to be her Legislative Assistant. I was 21 and was honored but nervous. She was brilliant, could be demanding, and her wit was so fast I could barely keep up. But she taught me "the ropes" (and in quick time) and also taught me about perseverance, integrity, bravery, and (well I could go on and on). I am sorry that I lost touch these last few years after I moved to North Carolina. But I did occasionally Google her name to see what battles she was taking on next. Godsend Ellen. Thank you for everything you gave me and left me. Know that I am only one of many many you have touched in your life.

My Aunt was an amazing woman who taught us all many great lessons. The world is a btter place because of her, and I am a stronger and hopefully wiser woman for having known her and her love.
