COON ELVIN R. COON, JR. Elvin Ralph Coon, Jr., age 87, died suddenly Thursday, December 6, 2012 in Oxford, NC. Born in Shoals, Martin County, Indiana, he was the son of the late Elvin Ralph and Valena Hall Coon. He attended Duke University, graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Civil Engineering, and received a law degree from George Washington University. Mr. Coon was a retired Major in the US Marine Corp, having served from 1943 - 1963. He was a veteran of the Korean War and worked as a military legal officer in the JAG office at the Pentagon and Quantico, VA, where he met the love of his life. He practiced law in Virginia from 1963 - 2007, then retired to Oxford, NC. Mr. Coon was a parishioner of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, a longtime member of Aquia Episcopal Church, Stafford, VA, and also a member of the Manasseh Masonic Lodge 182 A.F. & A.M, Manassas, VA. Mr. Coon was a devoted and loving husband of 53 years, a cherished father and grandfather. He was an avid reader who loved to learn everything this life had to offer. All who knew him were truly blessed by his wit and charm. To know him was to love him and he will be sorely missed by all. In honor of his life, a memorial service will be held on Monday, December 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Oxford by the Rev. James L. Pahl, Jr. On Tuesday, December 11, 2012 a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at Aquia Episcopal Church in Stafford, VA by the Rev. Jay Morris. Burial will follow at the church cemetery with full Military Honors. Surviving are his loving wife, Janette Portner Coon of Oxford; a son, Elvin Ralph Coon, III and wife Sieglinde von Deffner of Los Angeles, CA; daughters, Abby Coon Turnbull and husband Thomas Turnbull of Rochester Hills, MI, Julie Coon Hunt of Williamsburg, VA, and Margaret Coon Blanchard and husband Roger Blanchard of Oxford, NC; and, eight grandchildren, Andrew Turnbull, Kyle Turnbull, Katelyn Hunt, Daniel Hunt, Nicholas Hunt, Jordan Blanchard, Cameron Blanchard, and Tyler Blanchard.
