Lance Cpl. Erick J. Hodges

Erick J. Hodges Obituary

Erick Hodges'' family discovered he was fighting in Fallujah when they saw his picture in a a newspaper, preparing for battle. "It was good and bad," to see the photograph, said his mother, Marina Beyer. "It was exciting to see him looking good and in one piece... The bad part was knowing they were all about to go into battle." Hodges, 21, of Bay Point, Calif., was killed in a hostile attack Nov. 10, two days after his birthday. He was based at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Hodges joined the Marines after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks while he was still in high school. "He had a big heart and he wanted people to be happy," said his cousin, Sonya Graham. He had told his family he did not want to return to Iraq for his second stint. "He believed in what we were doing over there," said his father, Erick P. Hodges. "It''s just that he didn''t want to leave his family again."

I miss seeing Erics photo hanging on the wall at our local CVS (Longs Drugs) here in Alamo. His mother Maria was on the phone talking to Eric one day years ago when I was a customer. Her face was beaming as she took a call from her soldier. We will not forget the sacrifice Eric and Maria made for our country. God Bless you both

I was not blessed in having known Erick Jr. which I've been saddened from the moment I heard my very dear and long ago friend, Anna's voice on TV some time ago.
I hadn'T seen Anna nor her brother's, Henry & Ricky (Erick Sr.) in many years although was lucky to have spoken with all 3 at separate times some years back at the times I tried to re-connect, but timing didn'T seem to fit.
I remember the day so clearly as if it were yesterday when I'd been doing something in not really watching TV. But I had heard
a voice sounding so familiar sounding so sad. The voice so clearly had tears being Heart-broken. By the time I had glanced up to the TV, there had been the photo of a very young & handsome marine in uniform.
I had remembered seeing the same photo several times through the week on TV as the sad news had been announced that the Bay Area had lost it's first marine. Although I must have missed the name of the young marine so I wasen't aware of who he was at the time. I'd been focused & shocked as how this young marine's photo had looked so familiar as if I had known him. He actually had looked just like a very special friend from my youth of so many years ago. He too had been killed in the line of duty by what is termed "friendly-fire" although I had not learned of his passing for many years later.
So many memories had rushed through my mind as I had remembered my long ago friend and could have sworn it was the same person, but I knew it could not have been. This had been a very strange feeling inside my heart.
About that time, the female voice I had heard on tv I had recognized then right away. She had been my Childhood best-friend being Anna.
Being I hadn'T seen Anna nor her brother's in so many years I somehow had forgotten that her youngest brother, Ricky (Erick Sr.) would have been a grown man by that time & having had children of his own. However I hadn'T made the connection in my head that the young marine would be the Son' of Anna's youngest brother, Erick Sr. So in my throught's my mind was in a different time frame feeling so strange. Then I realized, the young marine, Erick Jr. had been Anna's younger Brother, Ricky's son.
Although then the second I had seen Anna & in hearing her voice full of so much Heart-breaking pain on TV.
(Note: "Anna" I hope you have run across this post). I recognized you right off.

My dear long ago friend, My words could never express my sadness & heart-break for your entire family. I wish we would have remained close as I promise you, had I'd been able. I would have been there for you.

My memories began to run wild as I would think of the so many times I'd come to your house & especially when You, your brother, Henry and yes of course, little RIcky before he became a grown man to take on the name, (Erick Sr.) I had remembered when we'd go to the movies. And I'm sure you know "what" memories came to mind in making me SMILE & Laugh. Those were some fun days.
I was blessed & lucky to have had the best of my youth as being your friend with your family.
I'd always been so sorry that our live's had gone in different directions as our families re-located & time takes people in different directions. I had always wished that we had remained in touch.
AND after years of seaching for you,: I was lucky & blessed to have found Ricky (Erick Sr.) through "Gil The Barber".
I have such fond memories that I'll always carry & charish for the hours I had the chance to have laughs with Ricky in hearing he had grown into a Man no longer being that little boy, Ricky. & He was such a good sport as I teased him about when he was young.
I so much wished I had the opporunity to have met all of your children & Ricky's whom are no longer children but grown adults. And I wish I would have been blessed to have met Rick's son,Erick Jr.
I remember hearing stories of a young marine as his photos had been on TV about how he'd been so crazy about the children over in another country so far from home.
I know he touched alot of live's & made alot of children & other's Happy by the kindness of his Heart & his Gift of caring. He much reminded me of You & your brother's of when we were so young.
As I stated, words could not express I am so sorry for Erick Jr's. passing Far Too Soon.
You perhaps may not realize how I could understand, but if you get a chance as I know you remember my brother well. You might want to look up Karl (Jr.) F. Gunther in this same Legacy.com and you will understand all the more.
Remember I think of you & your family always.

I was not blessed to have known Hodges before he was killed, but I was attached to the 3/5 BAS during November 2004. I was one of a few Army soldiers that were given the chance to serve along side the bravest Marines/Corpsmen that exist. When everyone caught word of Hodges' passing EVERYONE was saddened. There hasn't been one day since then that I don't think of Hodges. It has been 4 years, and it's still so fresh. I can only imagine what those of you who knew him before this think. Please know that there are still people praying for you to this day, and that think of Hodges daily.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Erick, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Marina:

Every time we talked at Longs in San Ramon you always spoke very highly of Erick even in tough times. I remember many conversations we had that you mentioned how proud you were of him. May God bless you and the family and all other U.S. solidiers throughtout the world.

I am so sorry for you loss. I'm sure Erick was a wonderful young man, the Marines only want the BEST... He will always be remembered as a brave and proud Marine. He's resting in God's hands now and is at peace. He died a hero's death and should and will always be remembered as such.

Dear Marina, Erick, Dustin & Dylan,

I did not know Erick but having just gone through this in September I can feel your pain. Your son is a Hero in every sense of the word. He died fighting for the freedoms we take for granted every day and he will never be forgotten! You have my heartfelt sympathy and all of my gratitude. You raised a fine young man or he would never have joined the Marine Corp. May God keep you in his arms and comfort you and your family in the days to come. God Bless you! Thank you Erick for your service to the USA and your sacrifice!

I only knew the boy, growing up at Tudor Court. Even then, he was an impressive young man. He was so caring with his little brothers and Roxanne, that it struck me. In contrast, Cyrene and Andra were not as nice to each other. It's wonderful to see such love of family. Erick will always be remembered warmly.
