EUGENE LEVINE Obituary

EUGENE LEVINE 1925 - 2017 Dr. Eugene Levine of Potomac, MD on July 28, 2017. Beloved husband of Barbara Stevenson Levine. Devoted father of Gary, Jeffrey, and Douglas (Laura) Levine. Cherished grandfather of Kaley, Scott and Stephen. He was born in New York City and graduated from Townsend Harris High School in 1941. He was in his junior year at the City College of New York when, at the age of 18, he was drafted into the United States Army Corps. On D-Day, he flew into Normandy with the 82nd Airborne Division in a glider. He received a Bronze Star for transmitting first weather reports from Normandy. Corporal Levine was then assigned to a weather unit of 1st Army Headquarters and remained with this unit through the breakout from Normandy, the liberation of Paris, Battle of the Bulge, and the push east into Germany. On April 12, 1945, he was one of the first soldiers to interview prisoners at Buchenwald concentration camp. His working proficiency in Yiddish helped him comprehend their stories. After his military service, Dr. Levine completed a master's degree in Public Administration. In 1950 he was recruited by the U.S. Public Health Service in Washington, DC as a biostatistician with the Division of Nursing Resources in HEW. For the next 25 years he conducted numerous studies of nursing needs and resources, published over 100 articles on his studies, and with Dr. Faye G. Abdellah, wrote the first book on research methodology for nurses and other health workers. He received his PHD from American University. In 1975 he was appointed Deputy Director, Division of Health Professions Analysis, in the U.S. Public Health Service. After retirement, he was an Associate Professor at the Georgetown University School of Nursing for several years. In 1993, he joined Dr. Abdellah in establishing the Graduate School of Nursing at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Services (USUHS) in Bethesda, MD, and continued to provide advice and guidance to students and faculty members. Dr. Levine was awarded a French Legion of Honor Medal in 2009. A graveside service will be held 12 p.m. on Tuesday at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park, Clarksburg, MD. www.sagelbloomfield.com www.sagelbloomfield.com
