Florent Agueh Obituary

AGUEH FLORENT AGUEH It is with great regret that we announce the passing of FLORENT AGUEH on May 16, 2009 in Washington, DC. Born in Benin, Florent served at the World Bank for over 25 years, retiring in 2001. He spent his earlier years in France obtaining high academic degrees. Florent was known as a deeply caring, sensitive and loving man, leaving an indelible mark on all those who had the privilege of knowing him. As a truly worldly man, Florent enjoyed discovering various genres of art, music and cultures. His eternal optimism, roaring laughter and ever beaming smile will be sorely missed. Florent Agueh is survived by his wife, daughter, two sons, daughter-in-law, brothers, sisters, relatives and friends. Viewing will be held May 21, 2009 from 5 to 8 p.m. at DeVOL FUNERAL HOME, 2222 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20007. Funeral mass will be held May 22, 2009 at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church, 2436 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, DC 20037. Interment will follow immediately after the mass at Rock Creek Cemetery, 201 Allison Street, NW, Washington, DC 20011.

It was absolutely my pleasure to be the medical student assigned to take care of Mr. Agueh while he was recently a patient at Georgetown University Hospital just before his passing.

Although I was always the first to wake him in the morning, he always greeted me with a kind smile and asked me how I was doing. My reply was always "Much better now that I am seeing you this morning." And it was absolutely true. He was always very helpful, pleasant and truly thankful for me waking him in the morning, asking him the same questions every single morning, before another person walked in shortly after to ask the same questions, and a third person, and a fourth person, and so on.

As a medical student you can sometimes feel that you are just bothering patients and feel bad for having to wake them so early just to write the same thing in the chart that the resident is going to write on the next page. However, Mr. Agueh was always appreciative of my visits and made me feel like I was truly taking care of and helping a patient feel better.

I enjoyed my visits to him after I left the team caring for him in the hospital. I enjoyed meeting all of his wonderful family members, who are in my thoughts and prayers in their time of grief.

Mr. Agueh's bright, kind smile will be one I will never forget, and will take with me through the rest of my journey in medicine.

My heart goes out to Florent's family. I am so saddened by the news of Florent's untimely passing. His love of God and humanity shone like a star from afar. He was one of my best friends and mentors at the Bank, and I will miss him dearly. I consider myself blessed to have been able to call him my friend and brother. Knowing God as he did, I am confident that he is resting in peace in the bosom of Abraham; knowing that he run the race and fought the good fight. He is no doubt smiling down at his family and friends. We love you.

My heart goes out to you at this time. As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life’s routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. Reading Psalms 121 is a very comforting scriptural passage. There you will find assurance of God’s support as well. Please accept my deepest sympathies.
