TRIMBLE FRANCES SMITH TRIMBLE Frances Smith Trimble, beloved wife of the late South Trimble III, died peacefully on November 19, 2014 in Bethesda, Maryland. Born in Walhalla, South Carolina in 1925, she was the youngest of six children of Clement and Alma Smith. Frances matriculated at Walhalla High School where she excelled in basketball, the long jump, and the 100 yard dash. She graduated from the University of South Carolina and was an active member of Pi Beta Phi, as well as the women's honor society, public affairs, and student government. Frances scored two touchdowns for the Pi Phis in the championship Powder Bowl football game. Her beloved brother, the late Stanley Smith, heard a radio broadcast of the game highlights while serving as a Navy fighter pilot in World War II. Frances moved to Washington, DC after she finished college. She enjoyed working for 15 years in sales at IBM. She married the late South Trimble III in 1960. Frances was the first woman at IBM who returned to work in 1961 after having had a child. They raised their three daughters in Chevy Chase Village. She was an active member of the community, enjoying a local gardening club and her long-standing literary group. She was a member of the Sulgrave Club. She played tennis for over 30 years with cherished friends at Chevy Chase Club. Her beloved husband South died soon after their 40th anniversary in 2000. Frances was delighted to take a very active role as grandmother to her only grandson South in the later years of her life. She loved dogs and was often seen by neighbors and friends walking them throughout the day. Every fall for many years, Frances maintained a cherished tradition of giving Nittany apples picked in Pennsylvania to her friends and neighbors. She loved art, politics, design, and reading. Frances adored her many close friends and caring for her family. Frances is survived by her three daughters Fran, Elizabeth, and Elaine, her grandson South Trimble, her son-in-law José Saiz, many nieces and nephews, and extended family. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 2014, at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 3630 Quesada Street, NW. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to National Cathedral School, Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart, or a charitable organization that works to stem the loss of sight due to macular degeneration or glaucoma.
