FRANK QUINE Obituary

Frank Quine
Francis E. (Frank) Quine, who spent 24 years working at the University of Maryland Philip Merrill College of Journalism after 18 years with the American Press Institute (API), died on Sunday, October 31, at his home in Broadlands, VA. He was 84. He and his wife Dr. Mary Ellen Doran-Quine previously lived in Reston, Virginia, for 38 years. Frank joined API -- long considered the gold standard in media training -- in 1969 at its New York City home at Columbia University, which moved to its Reston, Virginia, headquarters in 1974. He served as an associate director, managing director and then its director. He left the Institute in 1987 and joined the Merrill College the following year, serving as the college's development director before adding the title of assistant dean and expanding his administrative duties. He also was vice president of the college's American Journalism Review. Frank was born July 13, 1937, in Akron, Ohio. A native of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, he was a 1959 graduate of Kent State University School of Journalism. Earlier in his career, he held reporting and editing positions at the Jacksonville (Florida) Journal and Evening Independent in St. Petersburg, Florida. Survivors include Dr. Mary Ellen Doran-Quine, his wife of 43 years; two children from his first marriage to Beverly Champion, Laura Heinle (Thomas) of Silver Spring, MD, and Linda Barry (Chase) of Jacksonville, FL; a stepson, Sean Kelleher of Winchester, VA; two grandsons, William and Theo Heinle of Silver Spring; and stepgrandson, Ethan Barry of Jacksonville; two brothers, Thomas and John Quine, and two sisters, Anne Quine and Ellen Hill, all of Ohio. He was predeceased by son, Franklin Quine, stepson, Paul Kelleher, and brother, William Quine. Friends, family and colleagues are invited to share memories during a Celebration of Life, which will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, at Clyde's Willow Creek Farm, 42920 Broadlands Blvd., Broadlands, Virginia.

My condolences to the family. I worked with Frank on Society of Professional Journalists, D.C. Pro Chapter, endeavors and served with him on the chapter's SDX Foundation of Washington, D.C., board of directors. Always so professional, knowledgeable, compassionate and friendly. I will miss him. I lost my dad in April at age 92, and know what it feels like to be surprised that, since he was with us for so long and productively, he's not here when we didn't expect that. I know you will appreciate hearing from all who appreciated, loved and respected Frank. He did so much in life, and he left an impressive legacy. I will think of him often when attending meetings or events during which I ordinarily would have expected to see and enjoy conversing with him.
