Frederick Manning Obituary
On Wednesday, September 22, 2004, FREDERICK J. "RICK" MANNING, of Burtonsville, MD. Beloved husband of Ellen M. Manning; father of Kerry Manning, Relay, MD and Patrick Manning, Washington, DC; son of Helen Manning; brother of Jane, Robert (Jane E.), all of Marshfield, MA and John (Ellen) Manning, Oviedo, FL. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews and in-laws. Relatives and friends may call at COLLINS FUNERAL HOME, 500 University Blvd., West, Silver Spring, MD, Sunday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Memorial Chapel at Walter Reed Medical Center, Building 57, Washington, DC, on Monday, September 27 at 2 p.m. Interment Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to cancer research or to a charity of your choice.

Well, it's quite late to be commenting here, but I just now learned of COL Manning's death. You probably don't remember me, but I worked for him in Heidelberg at USAMRU-E. I also babysat (so to speak) Cleo and Pig Pen. I am very sorry that FJM left you so early and even after all these years, I still think of him fondly. My deepest condolences.

Dear Ellen, Patrick and Kerry,
I grieve Rick's passing with you but was so happy that I got to talk to him before he passed so that I could tell him myself how much he influenced me in my life. His powerful intellect, helpful and sunny demeanor helped shape me in my career. Indeed, to this day I say things and think about things in a way that is directly attributable to Rick. Legacies are important and I am part of his. I will feel successful if my son is half the man Rick was. My best to you and I think of all of you frequently. -Mason Jackson

The man with the white hair and a big heart. I sat next to him many times at the East County Advisory Board meetings ( I was a member of the board and later the outgoing chairman) . He was a gentleman and a scholar with a sutle smile all the time

My Dear Manning Family:
I was saddened to learn of Rick's passing. I first met Rick in the 6th grade at St. Raphael's School in Hyde Park. We attended BC High together and our paths separated when he went to the 'Cross' and I to the 'Heights'. Over the years I'd occasionally see his parents, and they'd let me know how he was doing. I know that over the years he must have been succcessful, not only in his family life but also professionally. He had that quiet air of confidence and drive about him that made him a supeb scholar and athelete. I remember that he gave up the opportunity to skip his senior year at B. C. High and enter college, but felt committed to stay and Captain the baseball team that year. I'm sure all of you have experienced his strong support and commitment in your relationship with him and I hope that will help to carry you through these difficult times.

I was so sad to hear that Rick had passed away. The few times that I met him he was such a gentleman and a nice person. Dear Ellen,
I will remember Rick with nothing but fond memories. I admired his focussed yet unhurried approach to life. I won't forget the trip to Florida (NASA) during which you both showed me such kindness, and your gifts for my house. A bright light has gone out with Rick's passing, but the memories will live on. He was someone very special.
