Fredrick Sheridan of McLean passed away at home on June 30th at the age of 95. Fred was President and a founder of SBE & Assoc, an Arlington architecture firm for over 55 years. Fred was predeceased by his beloved wife, Irene. He will be deeply missed by his loving family. Father of Cathy Jane (Karl) Berger, Eileen and Nancy. He was blessed with two grandchildren Michael Berger (Jenelle) and Kelly Berger (Adam) Faber and a great grandson Clark Faber. He is survived by his dear sister Betty Jane Waldow. Fred was born November 3, 1926 in Hazleton, PA. He proudly served the US Army in the Philippines in World War II, receiving the expert infantryman badge. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in high school.

After his military service, Fred attended Penn State University earning a BS in Architecture degree in 1951. Fred was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.

He began his career in New York and New Jersey arriving in Washington DC in 1953. He opened his own professional architecture practice in 1958.

Fred and SBE Assoc had a long and extensive history in Northern Virginia. He completed numerous projects with Dittmar Company for more than 40 years. SBE was named the Arlington Small Business of the Year in the same year he opened his offices at 3440 Fairfax Dr. He was an early and major contributor to the development of local building and zoning codes in Arlington, advocating for residents and landowners. His scope of work included more than 200 projects. Fred's versatility of design expertise extended from Courtland Towers to the Monastery of the Poor Clares to Marymount University to St. John Neumann Catholic Church to Southern Towers. His work ethic was respected by all who partnered with him. He turned business relationships into long friendships.

He married Irene in 1953 and the growing family moved to McLean in 1960 to a modern home he designed. Fred was a member of St. John the Beloved Roman Catholic Church in McLean, where he was an usher. He was a dedicated supporter of the former St. Colleta School for special needs children.

Fred was a leader in and actively involved in the Knights of the Columbus, the Order of Alhambra, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Arlington Host Lions Club, where he was honored with the Melvin Jones award for service.

With his father, he was a Washington Senators fan and later a Nationals Baseball season ticket holder. Fred and Irene stayed active playing tennis with friends at Langley Club. They enjoyed many vacations at the Delaware beach. With Irene, he loved to travel throughout the US and Europe. He always celebrated 4th of July and Christmas with memorable family parties at his McLean home. He hosted an annual St. Patrick's Day celebration at his Arlington office.

Visitation July 11, 3 to 7 p.m., Murphy Funeral Home, Arlington.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St John the Beloved Church, July 12, 11 a.m., with interment to follow at Fairfax Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to www.servicesource.org/donate. For more information, please visit
