Gail Weiss Obituary

Gail Wasserman Weiss of North Potomac, MD passed away on May 2, 2025. A collector of friends, travel experiences, strong opinions, and Cape Cod sea shells, she was a dedicated student and leader at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the Johns Hopkins University, an enthusiastic fan of the Washington Nationals, a skilled knitter, an even-more-skilled shopper, and a proud advocate for the Jewish community. Born October 26, 1946 in Philadelphia to Sylvia and Harry Wasserman, she was determined to get a college education and spent years as a teacher before forging a successful second career as a quality assurance manager, all while raising two children and being an active member of synagogues and community groups. After retirement she dedicated herself to lifelong learning, traveled around the world with her husband, knitted continuously — even at baseball games — and spent cherished summers on Cape Cod with her loving children and grandchildren. Gail is survived and forever loved by her husband David Weiss; her children Joanna and Greg Weiss, her son-in-law Daniel DeLeo; her grandchildren Ava and Jesse DeLeo; her sister Joyce Gerber, and her brother-in-law Ric Weiss. Memorial service May 5 at 2:30 p.m. at Garden of Remembrance Cemetery in Clarksburg, MD. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the American Jewish Committee, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, and/or Osher at JHU.

Gail was, as many have said, "a force of nature." She was kind, loving, loyal, and a very good friend to me and so many others. I admired her talent for organization and for knitting. Gail was never afraid to speak out for the things in which she believed. Thank you, Gail. I will miss you very much.

So sorry to hear about Gail´s passing. I taught her children in middle school and enjoyed meeting Gail at Osher at Johns Hopkins. She and I shared many good memories of her children and of classes at Osher. Cicily Iacangelo.

My condolences and thoughts to the Weiss family. Gail is my Aunt Joyce´s sister and my late Uncle Steve´s sister-in-law. Harry and Sylvia, as well as Gail and her family would come to visit them often. I remember those times fondly. Peace be with you all.

I respected and admired Gail's bright and ardent contributions to the discussions of the Mattathias Project. I am very grateful to have learned from her. May her memory be for a blessing.

I remember studying for our adult Bat Mivzvah at BJC and our group meetings thereafter. I'm very sad to hear of Gail's passing. She always "kept us on our toes".
