George Moss Obituary

George H. A. Moss, Jr. passed away due to complications of Crohn's Disease at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD on June 12, 2024. He was born in Liberty City/Miami Florida on June 27, 1944 the son of Villetta Adell Storr Moss Jackson and George H. A. Moss, Sr. The younger Mr. Moss and his siblings were first generation Americans. In his early childhood, he moved to New York City. Upon returning to Florida with his family, young Mr. Moss graduated from Booker T. Washington High school in 1962. Mr. Moss enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with distinction in the 82nd Airborne Division from 1962 to 1965. Upon leaving the Army, Mr. Moss attended Miami Dade Junior College from 1967 to 1969. He worked in the office of Miami's mayor in positions of increasing responsibility. At this time, Mr. Moss's talents as singer were well known, opening for such jazz greats as pianist Erroll Garner, Hugh Masekela, and Flip Wilson among others. He toured with "The Ink Spots" vocal group as well as appearing in jazz venues in Miami and later in Washington, DC. Always carrying a message of hope in his music, he would later record his own CD, "It's Never Too Late". In his later years he was a devoted friend of Universalist National Memorial Church, singing in the choir, caring for the building, serving as liturgist and being the soul of the congregation.
Mr. Moss's parents predeceased him as did his siblings Dwight Moss, Franklin Moss, Allison Moss and Tiba Moss. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lee-Folia Brunt; step-daughter Maria Brunt Mitchell and step-granddaughter Sophia-Marie Mitchell; his sister Althea Laverne "Alfie" Moss; two nieces Aisha Moss, Alia Moss Koonce Burgos, two grandnieces Kalani and Jasmine Burgos; and a son Andre Moss, from a previous marriage.
The funeral will be held Thursday, July 18 at Universalist National Memorial Church, 1810 16th Street NW, Washington, DC 20009. The viewing will take place at 10 a.m. and the funeral at 11 a.m. The burial will be at the Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain, Highway, Cheltenham, MD 20632 at 2:30 p.m.
