George Steinhauer Obituary

George Phillip Steinhauer passed away peacefully on April 21, 2024, at a care facility in West St. Paul, Minnesota at the age of 84. He is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Cynthia Knott Steinhauer, and their infant son Karl Philip Steinhauer. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Ed (Ted) and Suzanne Steinhauer; grandsons Henry, Frank, and Joseph Steinhauer; sisters Priscilla Steinhauer and Susan Steinhauer, and six nieces and nephews.

Cynthia Knott Steinhauer passed away on July 31, 2023, at the same care facility as her husband. Both George and Cynthia lived with dementia for many years, struggling to support each other in their decline. Their mutual care allowed them both to maintain their independence for as long as possible. They were active in their chosen life of retirement in Williamsburg, Virginia. George was an avid golfer and, served as a ranger at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. He sang in the church choir, alternately at Williamsburg Presbyterian and at St. Martin's Episcopal churches, as well as with the Williamsburg Choral Guild. Cynthia was an avid and talented quilter and gardener. She served both as a gardener and a textile conservator for Colonial Williamsburg. George was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and served the Department of the Navy for most of his career as a civilian Director of Personnel. At the time of his retirement, George was the Assistant Director for Classification for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

George and Cynthia moved to Minnesota in 2019 to be close to Ted and his family. They were able to stay active, going for frequent walks, taking chip shots on the lawn of their facility, and going for the occasional round of golf. They will be interred at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minnesota.

A memorial service for George will take place at St. Clement's Episcopal Church in St. Paul on June 29, 2024, at 11 a.m. Further information about both George and Cyndy can be found at O'Halloran and Murphy Funeral and Cremation Services.
