On Sunday, September 16, 2003 at the Oak Hill Manor Nursing Home, Ithaca, NY. She was a loving mother to her four children and loving wife to Ludwig Guckenheimer (1916-1991) for 51 years. She taught Mathematics and German in Dallas and in Washington, D.C. at Sidwell Friends School (1968-1981). She was a scholar and an innovator in educational methods and taught the family to prize and value learning. Gertrude was born and grew up in Darmstadt, Germany emigrating to the United States in 1937. She is survived by her four children, John Guckenheimer of Ithaca, Sam Guckenheimer of Seattle, Elizabeth Lee-Guckenheimer of Boston and Anna Rappaport of Chicago; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be held at Temple Sinai, 3100 Military Rd., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20015 on Monday, October 13 at 10:30 a.m. The family will receive visitors at the Embassy Suites, 4300 Military Rd., N.W., Washington, D.C. on Sunday, October 12 from 4 to 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Sinai.
