Gigliola spent her formative years in Sao Paulo attending the Instituto Dante Alighieri. Fluent in five languages, including English, she became enamored of American culture and enhanced her studies by working at the Cultural Union Brazil-United States. She was encouraged by her mentors to attend college in the U.S. and in 1945 entered the University of Missouri in Columbia, from which she graduated with a BA in two years. She taught courses in Italian Renaissance and in early Flemish art out of her Washington home from 1976 to 1982. A lover of opera, she and Bill made a point of attending operas at all the great houses of the world, from La Scala to Santa Fe. Gigliola and Bill moved to the senior community of Maplewood Park Place in Bethesda in January 2002. Gill enjoyed an active social life at Maplewood and her many friends there were of great support when Bill died in June of 2008. You held a bridal luncheon in my honor so that I could meet my mother's friends. You attended my wedding and I have a lovely photo of you and my Mom smiling happily together at the reception. When you left to live overseas, my mother wrote, "Cosi avro perduto la mia piu cara amica." You hosted me for coffee and pastries at your home in Milan and for pizza lunch in the centro storico. You called me when I was living in England and my mother had died. Your Requiem Mass was beautiful, a fitting tribute to someone who loved beauty. Your children and grandchildren conducted themselves with warmth and dignity. I know you are so proud of them all. A beautiful woman, a beautiful family, a beautiful life. My prayers for your journey to the Lord.

Gill, your friendship has always been very dear to me, from the stracciatella and TLC when I got sick in Paris to your loan of your Paris apt. in '10, and all the Christmas and other conversations in between and, not least, your concern for me over the past few years. You and Bill were the best hosts I ever met. You also raised five gifted and wonderful human beings. I have been blessed to know all of them even a little and you and Bill for many years. I always loved hearing what you were reading. Even more, I always wished I had taken your art classes. Rest in peace, dear heart. I send my love always, and my heartfelt condolences to your children and grandchildren. You were one of a kind.
