Giulio Scarzella Obituary

Scarzella

Giulio Italo Scarzella M.D., F.A.C.S. October 8, 1936 - August 15, 2022

Giulio was born on October 8, 1936, in Cairo, Egypt to Italian parents Mario and Georgette Scarzella, and was the eldest of three sons. He attended the Christian Brothers School and in addition to being an excellent student, he loved to play soccer. His genuine interest in all people came from working at his parent's small hotel in Egypt greeting and speaking with guests from all over the world. Giulio NEVER forgot a name, and learned "to be interesting, you must be interested."

Giulio knew as a young man that he wanted to become a physician and was accepted to medical school at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt. Dr. Giulio Scarzella graduated in July 1965 and traveled to the United States where he completed his Urology residency at the Washington Hospital Center in D.C., receiving his license to practice in August 1967.

Giulio's private medical practice was put on hold with his induction into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was selected to care for wounded soldiers at the Surgical Urology Clinic at the Womack Army Hospital in Fort Bragg, NC. He received several awards from the Army for outstanding service as a Lieutenant Colonel and completed his service with honors in October 1970. Giulio was extremely proud of his military service and was never without his "Vietnam Veteran: Proudly Served" cap. He even got a retired Army Veteran license plate for his scooter that he came to use later in life to go around.

On his return to civilian service, Giulio became a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, opening a successful private urology practice in Maryland and D.C. He always gave to others, generously performing pro bono surgeries for low income patients, traveling to Egypt to "give back to the country", and to Saudi Arabia to train their surgeons on new urological techniques. He was a frequent speaker at medical meetings, and pioneered the first of its kind support group for his urologic patients. He partnered with Catholic Charities to help the poor and underserved. Among numerous achievements, recognitions and awards, he was promoted to Clinical Professor of Urology at George Washington University Hospital in May 2013, and was inducted into the Legacy Society of Holy Cross Hospital in 2011.

During his 48 years in practice he always remained dedicated to his patients, retiring in 2015.

Giulio was a generous man, a loving husband and adored father and friend who liked to entertain, listen to classical music, watch soccer, "catch the rays", dance and swim. He loved to travel, especially on cruises, and fluently spoke French, Italian, English, Arabic and Spanish. His travels took him to all parts of the world, often more than once. Giulio lived a full and wonderful life, always surrounded by family and friends. Nothing made him happier than to make others laugh (with jokes that we had all heard a thousand times - but still people would encourage him to tell them "one more time Giulio, please!")

Sadly, after a long illness, Giulio was taken from his beloved wife Jerri, his children, family and close friends on August 15, 2022, peacefully at home, hand in hand. We were all blessed and so very appreciative of the time we had while he was here with us.

Giulio was extremely family oriented. He was blessed to have his four loving children, their spouses and their children close to him: Dawn Maria Scarzella Woolard (Brian, Jaiden and Skye) Lara Brown (Joe, Tess, Lily, Alana, and great-granddaughter, Leila) Giulio Scarzella, Jr. (Erin, Emmanuel, Evangeline) Derek Scarzella (Cathy, Leilani): brothers: Carlo (deceased), (Mina, Mario [deceased], Marco, Maria), John Paul, (Perpetua, Ryan, Sheldon, and Katerina; David, Skyla and Riley; Gina); Family Patriarch: Fernando Amato (Mirella, Adriano (Amy) and Valeria (Gabriele); cousin: Jojo Nicolardi. A host of other family and friends share in our loss.

As noted previously, Giulio loved to travel, and he visited many countries of the world. Therefore, it is truly fitting that his final journey was to go where he had not been before, to the open arms of his Heavenly Father and be welcomed into a place of peace everlasting.

The family sincerely appreciates the guidance and support provided by Angela R. Eiss, Licensed Funeral Director and Mortician, Going Home Cremation and Funeral Care during our time of grief. We also recognize, with heartfelt appreciation, the love and support of family and friends.

A Memorial Service is planned for Friday, October 7, 2022, 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 4900 Strathmore Avenue, Garrett Park, Maryland 20896. The family invites you to attend a celebration of Giulio's life following the service.

A second service and interment is planned for Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, you may choose to make a donation to Holy Cross Hospital or Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Giulio was more than my trusted urologist, he was my friend. I sought him out at a low point in my life, overwhelmed by a serious medical problem over looked by other prominent physicians. He guided, counseled and treated me until I left the DC area in 2005. Today, I´m 90 years old and the longest living renal transplant patient at Mayo Clinic, JAX. My journey be a with Guillio to whom shall forever be grateful.
Rest in eternal peace, my friend.

Although the flowers and their seeds fall to the ground and sleep for a season under a blanket of snow, they will awaken in the springtime to a season yet to come where flowers will never die and the dew of tears will never fall. May God and all of his angels comfort you at this time.

Uncle Giulio will always hold a special place in all our hearts. A few of my favorite memories of Uncle Giulio include playing poker with him at family get togethers, the conversation when he tried to convince me to sneak my daughter into an island resort that didn't allow children (was hilarious), and when he brought a stuffed llama to us at the hospital 18 years ago (which I still have).
Giulio was a proud man with a soft side.

My condolences to Dr. Scarzella's family. I had educational interactions with him as a urology resident in the 1990's and subsequently as a professional colleague in the local urology community. Dr. Scarzella was a gentleman's urologist and was well respected. My best wishes to the family. Peace be with him.

Dr. Scarzella was one of those human beings whom once you have met you never forgot for the rest of your life. I have had the privilege of working with Dr. Scarzella at the Urology Operating Room of Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland. His encyclopedic knowledge and surgical skills in the field of Urology, his humanity and humility, his love for people, his compassion for his patients were second to none. His sense of humor was unforgettable. Dr. Scarzella surely knew how to laugh and to how to have fun in life. He lived his life to the fullest and that is a true inspiration for all of us who were lucky enough to know him and to have been able to call him a friend. May he rest in peace. My deepest condolences to Dr. Scarzella´s loving and extraordinary wife Jerri Scarzella and his entire family. With profound gratitude and deepest respect to you, dear Dr. Scarzella.
