Glenn Skaggs Obituary

glenn a. Skaggs (Age 84)
Died Friday, May 20, 2016 at Shenandoah Place Assisted Living in New Market, VA, following a brief illness. A long-time resident of Adelphi, MD, he relocated to New Market in 2007. Mr. Skaggs was born in Jefferson County, KY and relocated as a child with his parents to Washington, DC, where he graduated from McKinley Technical High School. He received a Bachelor''s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland and was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, a national engineering honor society. He spent his entire career with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in DC. He enjoyed prolonged tours of duty in England and Italy, as well as a tour at a NRL facility in Chesapeake, MD. He was active for many years in the Boy Scouts of America and was a frequent and ardent camper. His other great interest were automobiles, mostly classic cars, and he especially enjoyed driving his 1967 MGB roadster with wire wheels, which he was adept on keeping in good repair. An avid reader, especially during the last six years, Mr. Skaggs read most or all of more than 1,100 books borrowed on his behalf from the New Market branch of the Shenandoah County Library. He is survived by Dean and Sandra Clatterbuck, their daughter, Kimberly Morris; his closest friends and adopted family members, Dean having met Glenn in 1949. He is also survived by three nephews, Eric, Karl and Kurt Skaggs. We wish to express our gratitude to Shenandoah Place Assisted Living, where he received warm and attentive care from a compassionate staff. We are also grateful for the support and comfort of the excellent team from Sentara-RMH Hospice. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 25 at 11 am at Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, New Market, VA. Memorial contributions may be made to Sentara-RMH Hospice, 2000 Beery Road, Harrisonburg, VA 22801 or to the New Market Area Library, PO Box 452, New Market, VA 22844. Theis Funeral Chapel in New Market, VA is handling the arrangements.

I had the privilege to both visit and attend numerous family gatherings with Glenn over the past nearly 30 years. We spent many hours discussing and working on personal computers, including hardware and software. Glenn was a brilliant electrical engineer, had an excellent sense of humor, and was a very nice friend and family member, too. We enjoyed many family dinners and outings to nearby Skyline Drive and Shenandoah Valley locations. He will be sorely missed.

I remember Glen well from our days in Troop twelve. He was a good guy back then and I am glad to learn of his interesting and successful life. My sincere condolences to Glen's family, and especially to Dean who I also remember well from those long ago days in Washington.
