Graham Wisner Obituary

In Loving Memory of Graham Wisner
1950 - 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Graham Wisner, age 74, after a courageous journey with Alzheimer's disease, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on June 15, 1950 in Washington DC, Graham was the beloved youngest son of Frank Gardiner Wisner and Mary Ellis Knowles. He grew up in Washington DC and was educated at St Albans, St Paul's and Antioch College. He received a law degree from Georgetown University School of Law. He practiced law in Washington at several firms notably Squire Patton Boggs.
Graham was a devoted husband and father. He was an idealist at heart with an adventurous spirit, quick wit a passion for history, painting, travel, and current affairs. He was known for his charm, sense of humor, and he touched the lives of everyone who knew him.
Though Alzheimer's disease took its toll in his last year, Graham's essence remained a source of inspiration. His family will always remember his warmth, resilience, and the light he brought into their lives.
He is survived by his adoring wife, Rania Hanano; his stepdaughter, Tayma Alassar; his siblings, Ambassador Frank G. Wisner and Ellis Wisner; his nieces and nephews, Sabrina Wisner, David Wisner, Bryan Wisner, Olivier Sarkozy, Caroline Sarkozy, Phoebe Backler, and Isaac Hazard. He is preceded in death by his sister Elizabeth (Wendy) Wisner.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Poet's Walk, Warrenton, for their compassionate care during Graham's final days.
A celebration of Graham's life will be held in the spring at a time and location to be announced.

"Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul, there is no such thing as separation."

Graham was an indomitable spirit and inspiration behind the complex but elegant US India civil nuclear accord. He was a masterful strategist on moving both sides of Congress to a unifying idea: that India and the United States could fully trust one another with sensitive nuclear technology. Always a joy to work with, Graham was a gem of a human being. He will be missed. Godspeed, Graham.

I met Graham in 1968, in Beirut. We were in a student "work camp", then we went to Egypt, Baghdad, and Paris. He opened the world to me--and I've never forgotten him. So funny! Last time I saw him was probably 1970.

I grew up with Graham in Washington, and we were schoolmates at StA and SPS. Regrettably we fell out of touch over the last 15 years. Now, as I'm preparing to fly back to DC for my mother's memorial service, I decided to track down Graham, only to learn of his recent passing. I'm quite saddened by this news. Graham was a special friend whom I will only miss more now that he's gone. My sincere condolences to his wife and family.

I knew Graham for 40 years in Washington. Always smart, charming and very witty. Our hearts are sad for Rania. He loved her so.

I am so sad to see this. I knew Graham through my Mom. They worked together at Squire Patton Boggs. He was one of my favorite people. His quick wit and infectious laugh will be missed. His stories too. My condolences to his family.
