I may have been linked to Helene because she was my husband's mom's first cousin (and friend!) But I loved her as family and friend myself. She was so kind, genteel, sweet, bright, loving, caring. I am so very sad that she and Gerry had to end their lives with more sadness than had otherwise filled their lives. I will miss Helene more than you know and am so glad that she was part of my life.

Many years ago Aunt Helene traveled through Iowa with a girlfriend. They stopped in Vinton to see us for a few days. Aunt Helene wanted her hair washed and set so we played Beauty Shop. I washed and set her hair and put her under the dryer to dry. After I got her all combed out, she looked at her new hairdo and told me what a great job I did and how happy she was with her hair. We had such a good time that day ... she always had a wonderful way of making me feel special. I love her and will miss her dearly.

When I was really little, Helene took me, twice, to see a play called "Rackaty Packaty House" about how dolls are really alive but the minute you look at them they freeze. I believed that for a long time. She took me downtown to see Disney's "Cinderella" and when she was very pregnant with Robin, she came with us to the Hiser Bethesda movie theater the first time I saw "The Wizard of Oz" where we had to stand in a long line. She was always so generous with her time and, until I finally told her to stop when I was 50, gave the best presents. She and Gerry were always wonderful company.
