Herbert Grimes was a born leader. He was able to lead young boys when we did not know what a leader was at that time. Getting people to listen and follow your command was a gift Herbert had that many young men that attended St. Emma Military Academy will never forget.

As a fan of the late Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, I found the amalgamation of these two ladies in Dianne Reeves. Twenty-five years ago, Ms. Reeves did a recording for a future t.v. show at the BET studio in Washington, D.C. This event was not made public, but a studio friend told me to be there.
The venue was set up like a night club and I was the only one there with Dianne Reeves about to sing to me! Just before the crew began recording, my St. Emma Military Academy schoolmate, Herb Grimes, rushed in! We looked at one another with the expression, "what are you doing here?" We couldn't talk during the recording, but at the first break, Ms. Reeves acknowledged our presence.
Starstruck, Herb and I were just done!
At that point in her career, Dianne Reeves had not reached her pinnacle, but Herb and I knew she was destined to superstardom. Recognition of this belief years later made us appreciate our time together with this brilliant singer. Besides the memories of our historic time at the only Black military school in America, Herb and I would always relive the momentous occasion we shared at the Dianne Reeves' recording.

Herb,
I just saw, again, Dance Party: The Teenarama Story that you co-produced. It still brings back so many good memories of our youth in D.C.
You were a great leader and ball player at Saint Emma Military Academy. Your spirit lives on for so many of us. Thank you for your friendship and presence in those critical developmental years.

On behalf of my family, I'd like to extend our condolences to the Grimes family. I have only known the Grimes for a few years through the Mighty St. Teresa Congregation and as well M.O.S.T.. Herb instantly gave me advice, as well as told me what I needed to do become the man I needed to be to support my family in the eyes of God. Also, he got me intouch with one of my high school friends that I had not communicated with in over 25 years, then explain why it was important to keep in touch even if it meant only speaking once a year. Herb Grimes, I love you and I know where you are and what you are doing. I hope too see you again. Love always the Basterrechea-Jones Family.

Herb played an important part in my life helping to direct my career in television. My internship some 20 years ago at WHMM, was one of the most memorable times in my life. Herb's sense of humor, his laugh and smile extended well beyond his time at 'HMM. I pray that God show Himself to your family as the Comforter He is; and remind you of your strength in Him. May your memories give you an everlasting smile and keep you when those tough times come. Blessings
