Herman Bushman Obituary

BUSHMAN

HERMAN JOSEPH BUSHMAN JR. Captain USN (Retired)

Captain Herman Joseph Bushman Jr., USN Retired, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on June 21, 2022. A career Navy submariner, he was an extraordinary person, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be forever missed. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Janet (O'Hagan), daughters Katherine and Mary Martha, and his siblings Marion Casey, Ione Kaminski, Rita Scovronske, Sr. Irene Bushman, Elizabeth McMullen, Lorraine Bushman, Robert Bushman, Sr., and Thomas Bushman, Sr. Herman was born in Appleton, Wisconsin February 4, 1925, to the late Herman (Sr.) and Barbara (Gruentzel) Bushman. He entered the US Naval Academy in 1945 where he was QB for the undefeated 150 lb. football team. Following graduation from the Academy in 1949, he served on the USS Maddox during the Korean War and later attended the Navy Submarine School in New London Connecticut to join the Silent Service. In 1955, he returned to the Academy for two years as an instructor and as an assistant football coach. Herman met his beloved Janet while stationed in San Diego. They were married in December 1958 and together, with a growing family, they embraced Navy life and successive assignments across the country and overseas. Subsequent assignments included Commanding Officer of the USS Sea Leopard, Executive Officer of USS Sperry, and Command of Submarine Division 33. His last assignment was with the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington D.C. where he worked with UN and NATO delegations on the Law of the Sea and nuclear non-proliferation treaties. He retired from the Navy in 1972. Following retirement, he joined his brothers' lumber business which led to decades long involvement with the Southern York County Corporation and Stewartstown Railroad. In addition, he remained active as a consultant for international affairs and national security efforts. Family and faith were Herman's foundations.

Herman is survived by his children Jeff (Linda), Matthew, Paul (Eileen), John, Joe (Kirsten) and Sarah Johnson (Dave); 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; sister Loretta Bushman, and many nieces and nephews.

Dear family and friends of Herman,
On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Herman“s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow "Bubblehead" departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor in the U.S. Submarine Force, including as Commanding Officer of USS Sea Leopard SS-483.
To our "Brother-of-the-Phin" we say, "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas." Thank you for your service to our country.
To the family... "may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you." 2 Thessalonians 3:16 (ESV).
Jim Sandman, FTC(SS) Ret,
National Chaplain, USSVI.
