Doctor Irving Mizus, I worked for Dr. Mizus in several different capacities. He was very kind, totally genuine and always calm. He was loved by all of his staff and patients. He was always attentive, taking extra time with his patients to learn about their often complicated medical history. Such an easy man to talk with, always calm, always caring. Dr. Mizus was the least demanding, soft spoken, genuine, understanding and kind person to work for. I had the privilege of working for him for 10 years. He was a terrific person to have as a boss, never once demanding, always kind. I am saddened by his loss. The medical community has lost a gifted physician, one of their finest, a giant in the world of medicine. I send prayers to his family. May all who held him in high regards Cherish the memory of this remarkable husband, father, sibling, physician. He truly was a giant among men and the easiest man to work for, learn from, I have ever known.

Dr. Mizus was the best Dr. He saved my husband Frank Carpenter in 1981. He was kind and very knowledgeable. He listened to his patients. You didn't feel like you were being pushed out. God Bless Him. Deborah Carpenter.

Irv was the best Doctor I ever knew. Simple by most outward appearances, his knowledge and ability was like a glacier with most of his wealth of incite deep within. I was blessed to know him and watch as his skill was displayed. I have missed him as the world of medicine has changed ( deteriorated as most of our generation of physicians moved to retirement ). God bless him and his family.

I first met Irv when I began to go to Suburban hospital It was easy to see he was a gifted physician
Later my partners and I were able to convince him to join us. It was a great moment for our practice. I had the honor of sitting next to Irv in our office for many years. This allowed us to talk on many occasions about difficult cases, problems with the practice of medicine, or just general topics about family and just about any topic that would come up. In case anyone didn´t know Irv was a brilliant physician. His patients would always benefit by the terrific care that he rendered. I know this personally because I chose Irv to take care of me for most of my problems. To the best of my knowledge, all of his patients loved him, and actually understood what level of care and dedication they received from him. I will always miss the time I spent with him discussing patients and practicing medicine next to each other. Aside from being a doctor, he was a wonderful person. One could always rely on Irv if there was a crisis. And he always did it without complaining. The world of medicine is a worse place without him. it was very difficult to write this because writing is not a skill of mine. Please accept my deepest condolences. He was a great doctor and friend and will be missed

In memory of Irving Mizus, MD.
I first met Irv in the summer of 1980 when I was an intern and resident at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore MD, and had a patient with a diffuse pneumonia. Dr. Mizus was the fellow for pulmonary at that time, and did a bronchoscopy on my patient. This patient turned out to have Pneumocystis pneumonia (at that time a very rare disease), and was the first case of AIDS at Johns Hopkins. At the time, we did not know what this meant, and I was constantly looking up stuff and asking Irv what to do. He, I, and everyone else at Hopkins were flummoxed by her case.
It was not until years later that I joined Pulmonologists PC of Gaithersburg and Kensington, and learned that Irv was also in pulmonary medicine in our medical community. He had been an Assistant Professor of Medicine at University of California, but came to Chevy Chase to start a solo private practice in pulmonary medicine. I did not know until years later that, while in California, he invented and developed the endotracheal tube exchanger that is now an integral part of critical care medicine. Irv never talked about his accomplishments, so the only way I found out was by seeing the US Patent granted to him which he had framed and embossed and was on his office wall.
Sir William Osler said "the good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the person who has the disease". Dr. Irving Mizus was a great physician. I constantly heard from his devoted patients how he would spend time with them taking care of them, looking for reversible causes of new problems that they would develop. He would make house calls (one of very few physicians to do so), visit patients in the hospital when he was not on duty. The respiratory therapists at Suburban Hospital told me that when they were overwhelmed with patient care, Dr. Mizus would go and get the medications his patients would need and give the medications via nebulizer himself. Most physicians don´t know how to do this, and would consider this not to be part of their responsibilities. Irv did what he thought would be best care for his patients. Dr. Irv Mizus did what we now call concierge medicine long before that term was coined, but he did not charge any additional fees for what he considered standard care, and the rest of us knew was extraordinary care.
Irv and I shared offices in Kensington for over 5 years. He was always caring and considerate, warm and sincere. He was always busy caring for his patients. When I would ask his advice about a challenging case, he always had new insights that I had not thought of beforehand.
There are very few weeks when a former patient of Dr. Mizus does not ask about how he is doing. He was beloved by all who knew him. I must say that when I inherited many of his patients after he retired, it was a bit intimidating for me to learn what a high level of detail, state of the art medicine, and extraordinary care his patients had come to expect.
He will be missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing him, working with him, or being cared by him. My deepest sympathies to his family.
