SNYDER J. EDWARD SNYDER, JR., RADM USN (Ret.) On Sunday, November 4, 2007 of McLean, VA. Beloved husband of Mary Louise Snyder; father of Anne Gibson Snyder, Middletown, MD and J. Edward Snyder, III, Palos Verdes, CA; grandfather of Jesse Edward Stovall. Family will receive friends on Thursday, November 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. at MONEY & KING FUNERAL HOME, 171 W. Maple Ave., Vienna, VA. Private interment Arlington National Cemetery. Family requests no flowers. If desired, donations may be made to Arleigh Burke Pavillion, 1739 Kirby Rd., McLean, VA 22101, Attn: Bob Demaria.

RADM Ed Snyder and I met at the 32d street Navy Officers club when he was skipper of USS New Jersey and I was missile officer on the USS Constellation CVA 64. We arranged for reciprocal underway visits for officers to observe flight ops and gun and missile shoots. Later when he was NAVOCEANO my last reserve billet was his legal adviser in the Pentagon I helped devise and execute the plan to merge USN Meteorology Command Suitland MD with Naval Oceanography in Bay St Louis MS.

I loved that man. I received a meritorious mast award from him . He was the right man at the right time to command the New Jersey . He will be continued to be missed by his crew until the last of us are gone.

Dear Mrs. Snyder and Family,
We were saddened to hear that RADM Snyder had passed away. The highlight of my 25 year naval career was serving under command of then Captain Snyder aboard the Battleship USS New Jersey (BB-62). I will always be indebted to ADM. Snyder for coming to Charleston ,S.C. to speak at my retirement ceremony aboard USS William H. Standley (CG-32) on 1 July, 1975. Please accept our sincere sympathy for your loss.

Mary Louise Snyder and Family:
In my 20 years in the Navy, I cherish my time aboard New Jersey more than any other. Captain Snyder was truly the "Sailors Skipper". His regard for his crew and support for them was truly outstanding. In my opinion, he was the ideal skipper for the Big J during the Viet Nam era. He knew when to stand firm, sometimes bucking Pentagon Brass, and when to bend, especially for one of his crew. I am proud of my time on New Jersey and feel priviledged to have served under Admiral Snyder's command. My time spent at the two reunions at the ship with both he and you further increased my respect and admiration for both of you. My best to you and your family.

Maria & I wish to extend to you and your family our deepest prayers for all of you. Ed was, above all, the pinnacle of Captains. I served under others, but he was the tops. We recently remenisced about the evening the four of us spent at the Norfolk '95 reunion and later the 2002 reunion - memories which will always stay with us.

Dear Mrs. Snyder & Family:

It was my privilege to serve under Admiral Snyder aboard the New Jersey and he was truly a once-in-a-lifetime captain and human being. What I remember most that seems appropriate at this time was Christmas Day 1969 aboard ship off the coast of Vietnam. Bob Hope and the full USO troupe came aboard the New Jersey and performed a full show for a grateful crew. As a radioman, I personally sent a telegram Captain Snyder personally wrote to Mrs. Bob Hope after the show thanking her for giving her husband up for Christmas to entertain a bunch of tired and war-weary sailors. It was the typical considerate and gentlemanly gesture that we who knew and loved him came to recognize all too often. So Mary Louise, thank you for sharing your husband with all his crews these many decades and over 52 months of consecutive sea duty protecting our nation and being an inspiration to his men. All of us would gladly lay down our lives for him. God bless you richly and abundantly at this time of loss.

Dear Mary Louise and Family,
It was an honor and a privilege to have served under Admiral Snyder. He was my first commanding officer. Although I never had the opportunity to meet him personnally while we served on the USS New Jersey, I and my wife, Judy, were extremely fortunate to finally get to meet and spend time with both the Admiral and you, Mary Louise, at recent reunions of the USS New Jersey Veterans. We will forever cherish the times we spent together. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. God bless.
