I only knew Jack for a little while and at the very end of his life. In the course of my genealogical research and ownership of the Zirkle Mill, I came across his name many times. To my astonishment, he lived a few miles from me in Northern Virginia.

As his father owned the Zirkle Mill many years ago, we had a common bond. I was very grateful to be given his collection of books.

Last year, I was at the mill tending the grounds when suddenly Jack and his daughter appeared around the corner. I was very pleased to have a picture taken with him on the back porch of the mill. I also showed him the signature of his father on the side of a grain bin in the basement, a signature from the 1930's.

He got quite animated talking about that time and he seemed robust and full of life. One year later he has gone to meet his maker. Such is the frailty of human life.
