Bob was a dear friend and colleague. His remarkable combination of intellect, wry wit, humility, and humanity made him one of the most universally trusted and beloved members of the University of Maryland community. He was a source of inspiration to many, including me.

Our dear Bob is no longer.
Bob and my late husband Marc Nerlove started out as locker room friends at the University of Maryland some time in the early 2000s. This evolved into a friendship between the four of us - Bob and Celia and Marc and me. The physicist and the economist developed an instant and deep rapport over discussions about Dutch art, contemporary Israel (Bob and Celia were our guides to developments and politics), music and literature, university politics, Indian food (not just discussions but many lunches at Woodlands in Takoma Park) and many other topics. Rarely have I met a person who was such a generous and sympathetic friend: Bob could be counted on to show up when Marc was in his many hospital and rehab stints to distract him and cheer him up.
It must be so hard to loose both Bob and Celia within a short time. From what Bob shared with us, we know that you have many wonderful memories and in this way he will always stay with you.
