JAMES FOWLER Obituary

James D. Fowler, Jr. (Age 77)  April 24, 1944 - February 11, 2022
James D. Fowler, Jr. of Ashburn, VA passed away peacefully on February 11, 2022 at the age of 77 with his family at his side. A native of Washington, DC, Jim was born on April 24, 1944 and attended schools around the world as a member of a military family. In 1962, he graduated from Baltimore City College High School in Maryland. After a year at Howard University, Jim was appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1967. This achievement made him the first African American to graduate from USMA whose parent had also graduated. In 1976, Jim joined ITT Corporation. He held positions of increasing responsibility for 20 years, first at ITT headquarters in New York City, then relocating to Minneapolis, MN where he eventually was named Executive Vice President and Director of Administration at ITT Consumer Financial Corporation. From 1993 to 1996, he was Director of Government Relations in the Corporation's Washington office. Jim also left his mark in the community. He was a founding member of the Executive Leadership Council, a nonprofit organization committed to the development of global black leaders, and later served as Executive Director, and subsequently President, of the organization and its related Foundation.  Blessed with a beautiful voice and athletic prowess, Jim enjoyed singing and playing sports, particularly baseball, basketball and tennis. After retirement, he loved to spend time boating and crabbing, and took great pride in helping his granddaughters catch their first fish. Jim's engaging personality and sense of humor helped to make him feel at home wherever life led him. Jim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Linda; his daughter Kimberly Fowler Luchtenberg (Joseph); his son, Scott Daniel Fowler; two granddaughters, Ashley and Alexandra Luchtenberg; his sister, Dianne Fowler Reason (Joseph Paul), nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Romay Lucas Fowler and James D. Fowler and his younger brother, David L. Fowler (Cynthia). An inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery will be held at a future date when it can be scheduled. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011 or alz.org.
