James Giese Obituary

James "Jim" Kenneth Giese, 94, of Collington CCRC in Mitchellville, passed away peacefully, with his family at his bedside, on Saturday, August 2, 2025.

Jim was born on September 5, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After earning a Masters degree, Jim accepted a job as the Greenbelt City Manager in 1962. He served the city of Greenbelt, Maryland for 28 years, receiving many accolades and high praise from his colleagues, and retired as the "Dean" of Maryland City Managers in 1991. Jim became Greenbelt's Outstanding Citizen in 2010.

He married Bernina McGee in 1998, and in 2009 they moved to Collington Continuing Care Retirement Community in Mitchellville, where he continued to pursue his various interests.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Gerome and Grace Giese, his brother Robert Giese, and his wife Bernina. He is survived by two stepdaughters: Marci (Dan) Milligan and Mickey (Harold) Sheppard; four grandchildren: Siobhan (Kirk) Cemper, Kieran (Kim) Milligan, Kayla Sheppard, and Colin (Beth) Milligan; five great-grandchildren: Declan and Liam Cemper, Kiera Milligan, and Maeve and Conor Milligan.

A Celebration of Life service for James K. Giese will be held on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Greenbelt Community Church, 1 Hillside Rd., Greenbelt, MD 20770.
