Learning of Jim's death greatly saddens me. Like Steve above, I worked with Jim at the Commerce Dept. in the 80's and 90's. Jim had a lot of great traits including his friendly personality and great sense of humor. But, what set Jim apart in my mind was his intelligence and computer systems design and programming ability. It was like he was born to do this stuff. They just didn't get any better. He made extraordinary contributions to the mission of our organization.
Jim, thanks for everything and you are certainly missed.

I shared an office with Jim at the Stimson Center for two years. I was struck every day by his kindness and compassion, and I feel lucky to have known him.

Jim McGurrin was one of the most selfless people I have ever known. He loved his family, and was always concerned for those whose knees were feeble. He was generous with his time and resources. He was and will always be a dear friend. My deepest condolences to Velma, Evan, Shannon, and his family.

I worked with Jim back in the '80's at the Department of Commerce. He and a small group of programmers literally built the automated export licensing system in use at BIS. The system still runs after 25 years, though at the time, even Jim thought of it only as an 'interim' solution. I remember Jim as a softspoken, easy going, and yet very focused and driven human being. He had a wry sense of humor which made him fun to work with. Rest in peace, 'ol pal.
