James Sawicki Obituary

SAWICKI JAMES ALBERT SAWICKI RET 1st Lt., U.S. Army James Albert Sawicki, RET. 1st Lt., U.S. Army 90, of Dale City, Virginia passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 7, 2012. Born March 6, 1921 in Ft. Dix, New Jersey, he was the son of Meczyslaw Sawicki and the former Harriet Whitehurst. On August 25, 1955 he married his "blue eyed sweetheart", the former Mary Isabelle Osborne, who survives him. Mr. Sawicki proudly served his country in World War II, stationed in Africa, Germany, and Anzio, Italy where he was severely wounded and awarded both The Purple Heart and The Bronze Star. After World War II he worked for the Army as a special investigator in Germany and Austria. He also worked with the State Department during that time. Eventually, he was ready to come back to the U.S. However, the government called him back into the Army in 1952 where he was with the 2nd Infantry Division. He was sent to Japan and later fought in The Korean War. In 1955, he was discharged from the Army and reenlisted as a Sergeant 1st Class and assigned to Western Maryland College, West- minster, MD, as an ROTC Instructor. It was there that he was as he called it "swept off his feet by a young girl", Mary Osbourne, who he married after a short courtship. He worked in Frederick, MD at the Army Reserve Center from 1956 to 1964, when he retired. He worked as a civilian at The Institute of Heraldry in Northern Virginia and his work in documenting Army insignia resulted in a lifelong hobby, which eventually led to his authoring 9 books, most of which are in The Library of Congress and in Army museums across the United States. He was a long time member of the Woodbridge First Church of the Nazarene, where he loved to challenge the Sunday School teachers with his questions. Surviving besides his loving wife of 56 years, Mary O. Sawicki; are two daughters, Linda M. Wince and her husband Louis, of Dumfries, VA and Debra A. Kenser and her husband Brad, of Cuba, ILL., and a son, John M. Sawicki and his wife, Kimberly, of Lake Ridge, VA. Mr. Sawicki, "Poppy", is also survived by seven grandchildren ranging in age from 30 years to one month: Brandon and Kevin Wince, Kellie and Kari Kenser, and Hunter, Mason, and Austin Sawicki. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 10, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m .at the Mountcastle Turch Funeral Home at 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City, VA. I will always treasure my memories of times spent with my precious Papa Jim. I am blessed to call him my grandpa. I "adopted" him but he was more than adopted, he was truly my grandpa.

To Miss Mary and her family, you will remain in my prayers. Athan and I are here for you in whatever way we can help. We love you.

To my dad- James Sawicki- what an inspiration you have been for me my entire life. You had high expectations for us and hopefully we met them. I cherish the time we spent together now more than ever. I am so glad I got to say so many things to you in the nursing home and I am so glad we were able to bring you home for your final days. We KNOW you did not want to live out your days in any nursing home. I love you now and will always!!! Your first born, Lin (Linda Sawicki Wince)

Debbie and I cherish fond memories of time spent with Jim. With an insatiable appetite for knowledge, he frequently asked me the critical questions related to life but I always had a sense that he already knew the answers. Most importantly, Jim embraced "the Way, the Truth, and the Life" and by now he has heard his Master say, "Well done, good and faithful servant." I will miss my dear friend until we meet again on the other side. Mary and family, be assured of our prayers.

Jim was a great man. Like his wife Mary, he was always so friendly and a delight to be around. I learned a lot from him and it is his story that inspired the documentation of not only his tale - but the tales of other soldiers that served after him. Thank you for your service and your friendship. - Greg

Mrs. Sawicki, and family – As I open the Journal Messenger New Paper on Thursday morning I was sorry to see Jim picture with the information that he had passed away. You are in my thoughts and prayers at this time. I have fond memories of the many Thursday nights spent bowling with Jim in the Men Commercial League at the Dale City Bowling Center. Jim and I met around 1980 one evening as we were at the bowling alley looking for a team to bowl with. He and I continue on to Thursday Night mixed when the Commercial league ended. A period of about 25 years. Many will miss him

It was so very sad to learn of the passing of Jim. He was truly a wonderful man. We had so much fun bowling with him many years ago. Church wasn't the same if you didn't see him there and if you were lucky enough to go to the same sunday school class as him well you know how interesting he made them. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.

Dear Sawicki family,

I was saddened when my dad told me the news of Mr. Sawicki's passing. I have such fond memories of getting my weekly hug from him Sunday mornings at church. His smile lit up any room! I, like many others, loved to listen to his stories and jokes. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I used to bowl with Mr. Sawicki at the Dale City bowling center and he was always very friendly and outgoing to everyone. He was a fine gentleman and I am better off for having known him.

No words can describe the pain that I feel in my heart. I feel like a ship without it's rudder. Lost. I know that I should be celebrating your long and very productive life right now, but I miss you so much. You made me into the man I am today and I can never thank you enough for that. I know you're looking down on me, resting your hand on my shoulder during these difficult times and I can take comfort in knowing that you are in a better place now. Please don't worry about Mom. We will take good care of her. I will never forget all that you've done for me and all the time we spent together. Dad, I miss you so much and love you with all my heart.

You are being called back to active duty one last time.

Johnny
