James Bertron "Bert" Withers Jr.

James B. Withers, Jr., better known as Bert, transitioned on Thursday, September 26, 2024. Bert was preceded in death by his wife Betty L. Withers who passed on February 9, 2024. Born on October 5, 1941, in Washington, DC, Bert was a second-generation Washingtonian, having attended District of Columbia Public Schools and graduating from McKinley Technical High School in 1959. He earned a degree in electrical engineering from Howard University in 1963, where he was both a member of ROTC's Scabbard & Blade Honor Society and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. (Xi Chapter). From 1966 -1968, he served in the U.S. Army as an officer (Captain) stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, overseeing Hawk Missile batteries. In 1973, he completed a master's degree in electrical engineering from the George Washington University, and earned his law degree in 1978 from the George Washington University School of Law. Bert worked as an electrical engineer and attorney at the Federal Communication Commission for 34 years. After retiring from the FCC, Bert, a jazz enthusiast, volunteered at WPFW-FM radio station and served as host of the radio program "The Vigil" for many years. He also worked with retired military veterans assisting them with various legal matters. Bert leaves behind a loving family, including his daughter, Samara Withers; his son, Darius Withers, daughter-in-law Christie Morris-Withers, two grandchildren; Leila Withers and Ian Withers; two sisters, Doris Withers and Vivian W. Canty; nephew, Nyerere Canty, and great-nephew, Jayden Canty, as well as many relatives and a host of friends and former colleagues.

Visitation will be held on Saturday October 12, 2024 at 10 a.m., followed by Memorial Service at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 400 I (Eye) St. SW, Washington, DC 20024.
