Joel was a wonderful man whom I will miss dearly. He was a family friend and big brother to me. He was always there for me to call on when I needed advice. I respected him immensely. Of all elections, who is going to tell me who to vote for! My love and support go out to all who loved him.

Joel was my neighbor as a child and has been my best and closest friend since then. With glee and without pretense he gathered and elevated people everywhere he went. His legendary enthusiasm, creativity and loyalty touched everyone and everything in his life. I Love You Joel..and your essence will live with me forever.

Joel Odum spent time in my home as a young child with his father and me. As an adult he returned frequently to visit in Birmingham. I will remember Joel as a loving and sincere boy and as a talented and intense young man. Pat Rooney, Joel's step-mother.

Joel got me to stand in front of the bulldozer at Glover Archbold Park & get arrested, because I shared his outrage over that takeover of parkland by a developer. He was one of the activists who inspired me to write my book Saving the Neighborhood: You Can Fight Developers & Win. Joel made a big difference with his life -- it's a huge loss to all of us who knew him -- and to all the citizens of this city, too.
