John Begeny Obituary

Begeny

John Patrick Begeny

John Patrick Begeny passed away peacefully at his home with his beloved dog, Charlie, at his side on August 21, 2023, after a brief but valiant battle with cancer. Born on September 23, 1968, in Rockville, Maryland, John was the son of the late Donald and Nancy Zahn Begeny.

He grew up in Ellicott City, Maryland, where he graduated from Mt. Hebron High School and went on to the University of Maryland where he graduated with a degree in Business.

He spent much of his professional career as a fundraiser for public broadcasting station WETA and was known by many as the co-host of the popular local series If You Lived Here. He was devoted to WETA's audiences and mission and was the recipient of two local EMMY awards for his work. He was a cherished colleague, known for his enthusiasm, occasional pranks, creative ideas, and warm laugh.

His early career started in the restaurant business as a manager at Kinkead's. He later developed an interest in television and honed his skills at Arlington Independent Media. His work behind the camera continued with the movie Boiler Room where he was an assistant to director Ben Younger. But you can watch John's earliest work as an extra in the original 1988 movie Hairspray.

John was an incomparably loving and kind soul with a unique sense of humor and love of life. His positive spirit was infectious, and he could easily make anyone smile. He very much enjoyed spending time with close friends and family and was quite the cook, as he readily shared his favorite recipes with everyone. He had a great eye for art and design and loved thrifting for hidden treasures. He had a passion for traveling and was fortunate to have visited locations throughout America and abroad. But he will most be remembered for his gift of storytelling and sharing the fun events in his life.

John is survived by his sister Lynda Manning (Jim) of Westminster, Maryland, and brother Mark Begeny (Donna) of McLean, Virginia. He will forever be the beloved uncle to six surviving nieces and nephews, Katelin Manning Harwood (Tim), Hannah Manning, Luke Manning, Abigail Manning, John ("Cal") Begeny and Jack Begeny, as well as a great uncle to Olivia Harwood. He is also survived by twenty-six Begeny and Zahn family cousins, a handful of aunts, and one uncle, Jim Eales. He was predeceased by his nephew, Christopher Manning.

A memorial service is being planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Hirshberg Foundation, Arlington Independent Media, WETA or a charity of your choice.

Yesterday on August 20, 2025 I attended a retirement party for Cynthia Cotton who is the Operations Program Manager for Classical Music radio station. The WETA office in Shillington has been completely renovated. Amazing how lovely the renovations fit the flagship WETA PBS station as the media main hob. Of course while taking a tour of my old stomping grounds where I was employed for close to ten years I reflected on the John B. presence no longer in the building. My tour guide David and I stated he is greatly missed. He would have lit up the building and spoken at her celebration! John's void cannot be replaced. Gone to Soon.

I am shocked at his passing and hope that his family and friends know how much he is missed by people he never even met! John will never know the lives he touched in the short time he lived. I remember those long days and nights at WETA while employed for close to ten years. John role was on-air fundraising and my role was direct marketing response ... better known as junk mail. My role was the Sweepstakes mailing! It was featured during those on-air pledge drives. John was a joy to be around and marketing in asking for funds are trying long days. Yet, John made it fun. I am pleased that our paths crossed in life. When I think about him often these days, "Why can't we all be immortal?" Particularly John. A great loss to mankind. Also, a great loss to the production, "If You Lived
Here".

Love and prayers to John and his family. Our family loved his PBS show and was impressed by his warmth and joy along with Christina ... we lost our daughter to cancer, and know how painful it is to receive this horrible diagnosis, and to fight a deadly cancer that took her life so rapidly, no matter how hard she fought it, and within 6 months she was gone. We truly empathize with you, dear John, and share the painful grief of your family and friends, especially your good friend Christine. Love Always and Forever... the TSU Family

Monday, 28 August: At the end I saw the "in Loving Memory" at the end of the Leesburg "If You Lived Here," on WETA. John was SUCH a Dear Soul, and it came through very clearly and strongly in those If You Lived Here series, which i love very much... In addition to John's family, my Heart and Soul are fully *With* John's dear belov-ed friend Christine (Tina) Louise. Please know that John is so belov-ed to so many of us whom he had not met... Seriously, i always wanted to go along and tag-along with you two on the wonderful house and splendid town visits. And, again, John's approachable, easy-going, and creative heart and spirit flows forth even through those PBS programs... This news is a shock and hits hard, what to speak of for you-all, John's family, external-family, friends, colleagues/compatriots, and other Loved-ones. With much love to you one and all.

As a native Washingtonian, I loved watching, "If you lived here," especially when the show featured neighborhoods I had lived in over the years. It was so much fun to hear John and Christine´s take on familiar places and their unfailing ability to point out the positive in almost any feature of the house being showcased. John´s character came through as kind, intelligent and witty, and unfailingly upbeat. One would never have guessed he was battling cancer. I met John at the animal hospital which cared for Charlie. He was always so cheerful and upbeat, and I always enjoyed watching his program on WETA. My condolences to all his family and friends. Rest in peace.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I enjoyed watching John and his colleague on "If You Lived Here". HIs creativity, sense of humor and great banter made the show entertaining.
