John Benvegar Obituary

John Joseph Benvegar, age 93, of Gaithersburg, Maryland passed away on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
John was born on February 8, 1932 in Baltimore, MD to the Late Vitus and Mary Lonegro Benvegar. He married Nina Gawen Hays on February 4, 1983. They had no children. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from February 1, 1951 to January 18, 1954, where he learned Chinese at the Army Language School and then served in Korea as a translator during the Korean war. After his discharge from the Army as corporal, he moved to Washington, DC where he earned a Bachelor of science in Foreign Service at Georgetown School of Foreign Service. He then entered the government service as a financial analyst with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and ended his government service career as a Division Director at Treasury Department's Bureau of the Public Debt. He has been retired since September 3, 1988; enjoying life fishing in the Chesapeake Bay and Florida waters, scuba diving, playing bridge and pool with friends at Benjamin Gaither Center,and as a world traveler with Nina. He also enjoyed his many new friendships at Kentlands Manor. John was active in the Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and was generous with many Catholic Charities.
A visitation for John will be held Tuesday, September 9, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at St Martin Of Tours Church, Gaithersburg, MD, followed by a mass of christian burial at 11:30 a.m. Interment will be held afterwards at Maryland Veterans Cemetery Crownsville, Crownsville, MD.
