JOHN DELANEY Obituary

DELANEY JOHN J. DELANEY John Joseph Delaney, of Fairfax, VA passed away peacefully with his family on Monday, May 8, 2017 at the Virginian Continuing Care Retirement Community in Fairfax, VA. He was born in Chelsea, MA to John and Catherine Delaney. He married Edna Dermody in 1951 and she died in 1986. He is survived by his wife Kathryn Gill (Kate) who he married in 1987. He enlisted in the US Army in 1941 and served as a member of a B-24 bomber combat crew of the 304th Bombardment Wing which flew missions in Italy, the Balkans and Southern France. After his discharge in 1945, he reenlisted in 1947 to attend officers' candidate and military police schools. Upon graduation, he served as a military police officer until his discharge in 1949 as a first lieutenant. He retired from the US Department of Defense in 1984 as the Chairman of the Screening Board for the Directorate for Industrial Security Review. After his retirement from the US Department of Defense he served as a consultant to the US Department of State and Federal Bureau of Investigation performing background security investigations. He is survived by two nephews, Leonard Flaherty of San Mateo, CA and Philip Flaherty of North Scituate, MA, and five stepchildren from his marriage to Kathryn Gill: Mary Kathleen Cassidy and husband Raymond of Fairfax, VA, Colleen Sasser and husband Gary, of Nashville, TN, Daniel Gill of Arlington, VA, Susan Mundy and husband Charles of Boulder, CO and Timothy Gill and wife Karla of Annandale, VA. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He and Kate enjoyed retirement together traveling throughout the US as well as numerous trips to Ireland. Through their shared interest and enthusiasm for all things Irish, he and Kate were active members in the The Ballyshaners (organizers of the Alexandria St. Patrick's Day Parade). Jack was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Knights of Columbus, and the Elks Club No. 2188 in Fairfax, VA. A viewing will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Fairfax Memorial Funeral home on Sunday, May 14. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Fairfax, VA, on Monday, May 15 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow mass at Fairfax Memorial Park. Donations in his name to the Air Force Aid Society, www.afas.org, or the Elks National Foundation, www.elks.org are welcome in lieu of flowers. www.fmfh.comwww.fmfh.com
