JOHN STANLEY DILLON M.D.

John Stanley Dillon, M.D., 91, a surgeon and teacher, died peacefully at his home in McLean, Virginia on June 23, 2022.

Dr. Dillon, a native of Washington, DC, was born at Columbia Hospital for Women and Children on October 19, 1930. He attended St. Gabriel Catholic School and graduated from Gonzaga College High School. He continued with the Jesuits after Gonzaga, graduating from the College of Arts and Sciences at Georgetown University in 1952 and Georgetown School of Medicine in 1956.

After completing his surgical residency at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, he returned to the Georgetown School of Medicine where he trained medical students and residents from 1963 until his retirement in 1996. The students awarded him with numerous "Golden Apple" awards for outstanding teaching and he was eventually retired to the apple orchard. He was a dedicated surgeon who cared deeply for his patients making sure to see each one every day they were in the hospital. In 1988, the John S. Dillon Chair in Surgical Oncology was established by the late Katherine Folger in recognition of the care she had received from Dr. Dillon at Georgetown University Hospital.

Dr. Dillon is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Frances, his six children Patrick A. Dillon, M.D. (Michelle), of St. Louis, MO, Mary C. Dillon Kerwin (Don) of Alexandria VA, Margaret A. Hyman (Richard) of Weston, CT, Elizabeth J. Dillon of Arlington, VA, Anne F. Craig (James) of Falls Church, VA and John J. Dillon (Miriam) of Falls Church, VA and fourteen grandchildren: Brent, Matthew, Joe, Sarah, Margaret, Kate, Brendan, Colleen, Bridget, Pete, J.P., Jameson, Hartwell and Moira and many nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

Dr. Dillon enjoyed fishing on the Bay, woodworking in the basement, cheering the Hoyas, a ride in a Stanley Steamer, Christmas lights and fireworks on the Fourth of July.

Dr. Dillon was predeceased in death by his parents John Arthur and Alice Stanley Dillon and his sister Alice D. Agnew.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, June 28 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church, 7001 Georgetown Pike, McLean VA. A celebration of life will follow. A visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on June 28 at St. Luke.

My condolences to the loss of Dr. Dillon. I worked with him as RN at Georgetown OR Services. Residents and students who trained under him performed very well, just like Dr. Dillon.
