John was a very dear friend to me. I still think about him very frequently, almost six years after his death. He was very humorous. When I met him, I was 26 and he was 75; but this never became an issue between us. He was very passionate about Bernard Lonergan and introduced me to his works, he felt very happy that I was reading Lonergan. We discussed Lonergan and religious issues zestfully, besides his own books and seminars; the fact that I wasn't a Christian never became an issue between us either. He let me wear his Jesuit cassock and wander around Georgetown University in this outfit as a young woman (As I said, he was humorous, and flexible, and fun to be around with, even if he was quite serious about his work and always said that he would die with his boots on.). He taught me Latin. He read my works and even corrected them. He liked Leonard Cohen. I will never forget him and will not let him be forgotten.

Dear Haughey Family,
We are so sorry for your great loss. I met John in a Bethesda prayer group before I met David, and we just kept in touch over time. Eventually, Father Haughey performed our wedding service in DC back in 1985 those many years ago. We so appreciated John's wisdom and friendship and we will sorely miss him. Our hearts break as we remember his many kindnesses, his generosity and his sense of humor. How he enjoyed a laugh! May your happy memories sustain you through this sad time.
Sincerely,
Sally and David Burke

John was a celebrity in academia, but 45 years ago, he became a member of our prayer group, and no person in it was untouched by the wealth of gifts he brought to us. He was our brother in Christ, taught us so much about communion with God and affirmed the potential in each person. An unforgettable force for good in the Church and one who showed us the loving face of Jesus. Surely his Eternity is a continuation of the joy, love and communion that was already burning in his heart. Pray for us, John. We'll join you soon, please God.

John was my theology professor at Fordham and became a mentor and a good friend. May he rest fully in Christ's peace.
