JOHN KROGMANN Obituary

JOHN C. KROGMANN "Jack" (Age 95)  U.S. Naval Reserve (Ret.)
On Tuesday, May 16, 2017, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle went to meet the Lord after enjoying an eventful life. He is survived by his wife, Marge, three children, a step-daughter, 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and another coming any day now. Jack served his country proudly and went to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy soon after Pearl Harbor. He survived two different ships being sunk, once on Friday the 13th by a German U-Boat and six weeks later on Christmas morning by an Italian submarine. Both incidents resulted in Jack spending a few days on a life boat in the middle of the Indian Ocean, then in the Atlantic Ocean on the second occasion. He later received a commission in the U.S. Navy and was serving on the USS Boxer (CV-21) during the Korean War when it caught fire. He later went into the Naval Reserve where he served until the 1970's and retired as a Captain. Jack also worked in the U.S. Government until his retirement in 1980. He was quite active in his retired life as he loved to garden, find yard sales, and work his beehives and fish. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Murphy's Funeral Home, in Falls Church, VA., Saturday, May 27 at 1 p.m. He will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

I had the great pleasure of once working with Jack at the Naval Electronic Systems Command (now NavSpaWar) many years ago in Crystal City. He was a quiet, soft spoken man with a great sense of humor and keen intelligence. On top of that, he was one of the nicest and considerate people I've ever met. I also was very fond of his wife Margie. My husband and I along with the Strayers and Stevensons shared many good times together which evokes very fond memories. Thank you for enriching my life, and rest in peace dear Jack. My deepest and sincere condolences to Margie and family. May God embrace you at this time.

Jack was a good friend of my parents, Charlie and Dotty Harris, as well as a member of our Lodge, Central Lodge #1 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Washington. Our condolences to Marge and the rest of his family. We will miss him. Larry & Mary Harris
