JOHN NOGA Obituary

John Thomas Noga, MD "Tom"
On Thursday, April 23, 2020, age 68, of New Castle, VA. Beloved husband of Marguerite Mondor Noga; father of Ahren and Sinead (Dinkel) Noga, Carianne Noga and Damien Noga. Tom was preceded in death by his father, Charles E. Noga, his mother, Katherine E. Noga, and his sister, Christina A. Noga. At the time of his death he was eagerly awaiting the birth of his first granddaughter. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by mother-in-law Beneva Mondor, brothers- and sisters-in-law Christine (Mondor) and Steve Feher, Raymond Mondor, Michele (Mondor) Hayes, Paul and Marion Mondor, Mark Mondor and Joyce McNemar, Karen (Mondor) Schlueter, and numerous close relatives and friends. Growing up in Northern Virginia, Tom enjoyed family gatherings with his many cousins and aunts and uncles. He formed lifelong friendships at an early age, and added many close friends throughout his life. His three children remember him as a strong, loving father who encouraged them through example to investigate everything life had to offer, and inspired them to pursue their individual educational and personal aspirations. Family stories center around enjoyment of nature and camping, annual family reunion beach trips, music appreciation and performance, especially piano and guitar, and reading on diverse topics from philosophy to cosmology. Tom's career was guided by his deep interest in science and medicine, coupled with his genuine compassion and his understanding of the suffering of others. He attended college at Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, (BS and MS, Engineering). He received his MD from George Washington University, Washington, DC, and completed residency training in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. He then completed a research fellowship with NIMH's Clinical Brain Disorders Branch before embarking on his career as a psychiatrist, with a sub-specialty in geriatric psychiatry. After 11 years in Atlanta, Georgia, first with Emory University and then in private practice, he accepted a position as an Attending Psychiatrist at Catawba Hospital, near Roanoke, VA. This move allowed Tom and Marguerite to realize their dream of living close to nature, and he enjoyed the peace and quiet that surrounded them there. Arrangements are being made by Paitsel Funeral Home, New Castle, VA. No service is planned at this time, but a celebration of Tom's life will be held when circumstances allow. Until we are able to gather in person, please share thoughts and memories of Tom in the online guestbook. In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions in his memory to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Doctors Without Borders, or the charity of one's choice.

Dear Marguerite, Ahren, Damien, and Carianne,

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. I didn't really get to know Tom until Tina, my close friend of over 15 years, passed away in 2005. I have cherished my time with all of you since then, especially the monthly dinners over the years that Pam, Vicky and I would have with Charlie, including the times when Ahren and Damien would join. My deepest sympathy to all of you.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Dr. Noga. He was very interesting and fun to talk to when we worked together at Catawba.

I will miss Tom so much. He was my psychiatrist friend and neighbor in Stone Mountain for many years, and our families shared countless beautiful times together. Tom and I could talk about anything, and we did. His calm, pleasant and reassuring manner was something I loved about him. I feel so lucky to have crossed paths with this special man. I will miss him.

My heart is broken! He took a special interest in me because of his education, specialty medicine, and experience. He was always so gracious with his thoughts and his input was always appreciated! My heart breaks for his children and his unborn granddaughter. Thank you, Tom, wherever you may be. I will be forever grateful and I will miss you!

My heart is breaking for all of you Nogas. I've known Tom, and have loved him as a brother, for well over half my life. There are so many joyful memories -- playing music together, the births of his children, camping, the marriage of his son, Toad Hall(!), and many more -- I will miss him terribly for the rest of my life. I hope all of you in Tom's immediate family will derive peace and comfort from memories of his love for you and the many ways that he expressed it. As those things are a part of you, so he lives on in you.

Deepest condolences, and sending all love from the West Coast.

Tom will be greatly missed. He always carried an energy and smile that were a joy to be around. A caring soul who valued his family and friends. Intelligent devoted father and husband who led by example. He just made the world a better place to be a part of.
