JOHN RAUBITSCHEK Obituary

John Hugh Raubitschek
John Hugh Raubitschek peacefully passed away January 29, 2021 in Midlothian, VA. He was 78.  Born September 2, 1942 in Princeton, NJ to Drs. Antony E. Raubitschek and Isabelle K. Raubitschek, John attended Georgetown Preparatory School, followed by Princeton University, where he graduated in 1964 with a degree in Chemistry. John continued his studies and obtained a J.D. from Georgetown Law School in 1969. For the majority of his life, John resided in the Washington, DC. area. He applied his science background and legal training as a patent and intellectual property attorney at several US government agencies including the Departments of Commerce, Energy, Navy and Army, as well as the National Science Foundation. Among his key achievements was being the primary drafter of the Technology Transfer Commercialization Act of 2000, which amended the 1980 "Bayh-Dole Act" to cover licensing of inventions produced by employees of the federal government. After 45 years of government service, he retired in 2013.  One of John's favorite pastimes was visiting Ocean City, MD. An avid swimmer, he spent many summers enjoying the ocean and beach with his family. John's Catholic faith was very important to him and he regularly attended Bible study and religious retreats. He also enjoyed traveling - always bringing back a thoughtful souvenir for those whom he loved.  John is survived by a daughter, Dr. Tamara Pringle, MD of Richmond, VA.; a son, Jeffrey of San Francisco, CA; former wife, Nancy, of Falls Church, VA; and three grandchildren: Mercer, Jason, and Camden Pringle. A memorial service will be held May 13, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at Queen of Apostles Catholic Church in Falls Church, VA, followed by a private interment at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, VA.

I am sorry to learn that John passed away. He was a fabulous attorney and a kind man. We shared many legal discussions over the years. I learned a lot from him regarding Bayh-Dole. We often spoke of our families and he was very proud of his children. May his memory be a blessing.

John was a giant in his field. In addition to drafting the Technology Transfer Commercialization Act, John also drafted the implementing regulations for the Bayh-Dole Act. To many government intellectual property attorneys, John was a friend and mentor. He would be the first person we would call when working through a complex legal issue. He will be sorely missed.

I met John around the time he retired. His effort to continue to learn about and practice his Catholic faith provided good witness for us all to try and do so regardless of our stage in life. May the perpetual light shine upon him.
