SAIA

DR. JOHN SAIA

Dr. John S. Saia passed away peacefully on August 2, 2022, at his home in Naples, Florida., John was born on April 26, 1936. He was the son of John and Adeline Saia and was born in the Bronx, New York He was a graduate of Wagner College. where he met his wife, Barbara. They were married for 60 years. He attended Georgetown University Medical School. where he specialized in internal medicine and pulmonology. Upon graduation, he served as a captain in the United States Air Force. After leaving the service, he started the Rockville Internal Medical Group, where he practiced for 45 years. Throughout his career he was beloved by his staff and patients, as well, and was voted a "top doctor" by Washingtonian Magazine.

John served on the board of Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, and also worked part time as a physician for the Kodak Corporation.

It is insufficient to just note that John was a dedicated and well-respected physician. According to his many friends and patients, he was the original Doctor Welby, but with an outrageous sense of humor. He wore his care and kindness like a starched white lab coat. To some, he was the Italian Stallion, to others Dr. Frank N. Stein.

John and Barbara spent their summers at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York, where Barbara's family had been going since 1908. He treasured his time there with his children and grandchildren.

He was an accomplished tennis player, water skier and photographer, he loved his Italian heritage and Italian music, and was a member of the Italian Club. He was known for his hilarious impressions and impromptu skits.

In addition to his wife, Barbara, John is survived by his son John

(Priscilla) Saia of Potomac Falls, Virginia, his daughter Carrie (Frank) Trulaske of St Louis, Missouri, and his son Chris (Katia) Saia of Naples, Florida. He was adored by his grandchildren Kendall, Kaki, Caroline, Grace McDaniel, and Eduarda Alvis Miranda. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Baum, his cherished nephews William and John Baum, and niece Susan Pruneau. In lieu of flowers, a donation can made in his memory to Georgetown University Medical Fund a Fellow for Parkinsons Program at

So sorry to be reading about Dr. Saia's passing 2 years ago. He took such good care of our family back in Rockville. We stared with him in 1980 and left the area in 2003. I can honestly say he was the best family doctor we ever had and set a standard none have met since we moved away. We still complain about current health care by saying this is not how Dr. Saia would have treated us. I never heard the Dr. Welbey reference while living in Rockville, but it's a good one and reflects highly on a wonderful man and doctor. Our sincere condolences to his wife and family. Wish we could have seen him again, before he passed. He was like family to us.

I am sad to hear of Dr Saia´s passing. He was my doctor for so many years once I left my pediatricians care. He also was our entire family´s doctor and always felt like he was our personal Dr. Welby. I think of him often when passing the spot where the offices were on Veirs Mill Rd.

Dr. Saia was the coolest dude this side of Dean Martin.
I had the pleasure of being around the Dr. and (Barbara) and their family for over 30 years. What a fun loving man. An absolute treasure. They don make them like that anymore. He was very kind and always happy go lucky. He will be missed..

The McDonald and Saia families had a lot of fun together - Lakewood Country Club, swim meets, poker games in the basement (adults only) trips in the RV (parents only), the boat and seeing Clint Holmes (oh yea that's right Coleen and Chris were left at home with a babysitter). Good times, great fun and fabulous memories. Dr. Saia was in the middle of it all. Dr. Saia, your antics were always so entertaining. You are already missed. You touched so many lives and did so many great things - thank you! Rest now... you deserve peace... I know you are in heaven entertaining anyone who will watch and listen. You are truly one of a kind. Until we see each other again... I love you! Hugs, kisses and peace!

Worked many years in radiology at Suburban Hospital. He would always pass through radiology between 5:30 and 6:30 am on his way to ICU to round on his patients. He always had time to chat a few minutes with our early am staff. The man is a legend and will surely be missed by all that knew him. RIP brother.

Dr. Saia was one of a kind from a group of doctors that took care of Rockville. As a nurse, I saw Dr. Saia frequently, especially with critical patients. He took care of my dad. He has been missed but left his mark. God Bless.

I am heart-broken in hearing of John´s passing. We´ve known each other from work & our friendship over the years. You were rather best Doctor & friend anyone could ever have. You will be sorely missed, my friend. And you had a lovely family, too. I miss you already.

I worked with Dr. Saia for many years at Suburban Hospital. He was an excellent physician and showed compassion. He was my primary care physician as well. They certainly don´t educate/train physicians like Dr. Saia.
