John Jeffrey Stanton

John Jeffrey Stanton, born in Wichita Falls TX, passed away on July 19, 2023 at his home in Arlington, VA where he had resided for 43 years. It was his 67th birthday.

John, who preferred to go by Jeff or simply "Coach", was born to John J. Stanton, Sr. and Joan Marley on July 19, 1956. With a father in the United States Air Force, he lived in several places but spent his formative years in the New England region, and in particular the western part of Massachusetts.

John attended Holyoke Catholic high school in Chicopee, MA, studied at Nichols College, and later the University of Detroit Mercy, where he earned a Master's degree in public administration and international affairs.

He was a freelance journalist, and authored several books, articles, and essays on national security, public policy, and topics ranging from education and healthcare policies to nuclear proliferation, and cyber- warfare. He was a lifetime member of the National Defense Industrial Association, where he worked for ten years while writing for National Defense Magazine.

John was a gridiron football coach for over 30 years at various levels from youth through high-school. At Nichols, he had been a lineman on their NCAA DIII championship team. Beyond sports, he was also a passionate mentor, and worked as a guidance counselor and substitute teacher in his later years. In any capacity, he loved to guide the next generation.

John is survived by his wife Scylla, whom he married in January of 1981; his son, Damien; his daughter-in-law Jelila; and his grandson, Aaron.

Private memorial services are scheduled for a later date.

Hey Scylla - and Damian.
I only today found out about Jeff's passing. I was quite upset.
We had been reconnecting after a time apart and enjoying our reminiscing. I think we had lunch about 6-7 months ago and tried too rendezvous at least a couple time a year.
Have you already had the private service?!?!?!

Scylla, Damien, Entire Stanton Family & Friends, My thoughts and prayers are with All of you. John was like a brother to me and also to so many other great friends we were so very fortunate to have made at Nichols College back in the mid 70's. God blessed All of us with so many great memories to cherish forever. We were teammates on our Championship Football Teams and partied like Rock Stars after every game. Most of us lived in the Budleigh Dorm on campus ( THE PITT ) where we truly enjoyed so many good times together as a group. John possessed so many great traits - Intelligent, Great sense of humor, Loyal, Compassionate, Dedicated, Great work ethic, just an all around great guy. I will miss you my friend, rest in peace until we meet again. May God continue to bless the Stanton Family. With heartfelt sympathy, Pat Clarke
