JOHN TRACEY Obituary

JOHN CHARLES TRACEY The Honorable John Charles Tracey, 86, of Silver Spring, MD, beloved husband of Lynde (Taylor) Tracey, passed away on March 11, 2018, surrounded by the ones he laughed with, lived for, and loved. John "Jack" was born in Silver Spring, where he lived most of his life. He worked as a Capitol page where he was chief page to the Speaker of the House, Sam Rayburn. He earned a high school degree from the US Capitol Page School. While attending Page School, he joined the United States Marine Corps reserves and later served with the US Marine Corps in Korea VMF 321. John was a US Capitol Police Officer while attending college and law school. He attended the University of MD, where he earned a BA and his Juris Doctorate. He was later appointed Juvenile Judge for the District Court of Maryland. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Lynde; his children (and their spouses), John W. Tracey (Janis), Jody Leigh Tracey (Chuck), Juliette Goldman (Robert), and Jennifer Kishimori (Scott); his grandchildren, Jason Tracey (Amanda), Jessica Tracey and Taylor Goldman; his two great-grandchildren, Jack and Hank Tracey; his sister, Susan Neal; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Jill Tracey and his parents, John and Nettie Barkdoll Tracey. Jack exemplified a life well-lived. He was a Master Mason in Hiram-Takoma Lodge #10, member of the Washington, DC Scottish Rite receiving the 32 degree, founder of the Montgomery County Boys Home, which became the Hearts and Homes for Youth, member of the National Fraternal Order of Police, member of Montgomery County Fraternal Order of Police, life member of the Order of DeMolay, and served his community at large in countless organizations as director and member on numerous boards. He cast a positive influence and was an inspiration to thousands of individuals and families. Jack had a great love of playing music, singing, and spending time with family, friends, and nature. In addition to being the 1945 Yo-Yo Champion of Washington, DC, he was a remarkable raconteur, a great neighbor, and an all around fun and loving gentleman. We thank God for the gift of his life and the blessing of the time we spent with him. I was saddened to learn just today of the death of Judge John Charles Tracey. In the 1940s Tracey grew up in the house that Nan McCoy and I have owned for the past 26 years.

One day in 2004 he knocked on our door and introduced himself to Nan. I wasn't home but she invited him in and showed him around. I couldn't believe I wasn't there to ask him questions.

Over the years he returned bringing various members of his family. One time he brought his granddaughter and I showed her her grandfather's initials, "JT," that he scratched into the concrete foundation of our house.

The Judge was the one who told me that the granite retaining wall that surrounds our house was constructed of leftover stone from the construction of the 1899 Washington, DC Post Office at 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, today the Trump Hotel!

He gave me this photo of what our house looked like in the 1940s when it (sigh) had a front porch.

It was an honor to know him.

I had the pleasure of appearing before Judge Tracey when I was a young prosecutor. He was a wonderful human being who was completely dedicated to his job and the children who appeared before him in juvenile court. I also was privileged to see him at various judicial functions during his later years. He always had a kind word for everyone. I will miss him.

Jack Tracey was a dear friend to my parents (John & Duane Mitchell), a loyal friend to his judicial 'family', and a lifelong advocate for good, fairness, and children. We are all lucky to have known and worked with him. We share the loss with the Tracey family and offer most sincere sympathy - as well and thanks for sharing Jack with us for so many years.

I have such fond memories of Judge Tracey and recall so many of the young people's lives he impacted. He was truly a remarkable man. The world is less bright today without his shining star. He will be missed. Blessings to his family...how lucky you were to have him in your life.

I am deeply sadden to learn of the death of Jack. He mentored me when I received the assignment as a judge of the Juvenile Court Division of the Circuit Court for Baltimore City. He and Doug Moore freely gave their advice and counsel. They also supported our community in the creation of our CASA program which we modeled on what he and Doug established in Montgomery County. Jack Tracey was a treasured colleague. Jack also had a legion o friends in juvenile courts across America. We all respected him! Rest in peace old colleague and friend.

My condolences to all of you. I had the pleasure of meeting Judge Tracey, but just once. He was a gentleman and a wonderful story teller. We chatted for an hour or two, just telling stories back and forth. I could have done this for 10 hours or more. He was witty and charming.
I regret that I did not know him better or get to spend more time with him.
I guess this was 5 years ago or more, but I remember his smile and decency.
