JOHN C. URBAITIS M.D.

JOHN CHAPMAN URBAITIS, M.D.  
Age 73, a resident of the Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD area for 45 years, passed away August 14, 2014 in Edinburgh, Scotland.  He was a Psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins 1969-1971 and Director of psychiatry at Sinai Hospital, 1991-96. He remained on the staff at Sinai until his retirement last year. Advocate for community mental health through various professional associations. Founding director, Maryland Council of Community Mental Health Centers; Maryland Psychiatric Association (MPS) president, 1988; MPS Lifetime of Service Award in 2005 for career-long pattern of unwavering dedication, commitment, and leadership to the organization and who has made significant contributions to the mental health of the community through clinical work, teaching, administration, or research. Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and served in various capacities with that organization over the years. In 2007, Dr. Urbaitis received the Ronald Shellow Award, given to a member of the APA Assembly who has served with distinction.  He is survived by his wife Barbara Matheson and daughter Jessie Chapman, architect Charlottesville, VA. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., October 4, 2014, at Second Presbyterian Church 4200 Saint Paul Street, Baltimore, MD 21218.
