Father Woodward was the most influential non-family member in my life.

When I was a 15 year old Gonzaga student, he convinced my parents to allow me to go away for an internship. This helped me to learn independence and self-sufficiency.

He -taught- me math for four years. In addition to that, what I -learned- was to see God´s hand in the beauty of His creation. In math, everything made sense. You can´t know the answer to every question - it is impossible to know the last digit of pi - but the easy questions are solvable, with the right attitude and insight.

Thank you, Father Woodward! I don´t need calculus every day, but I do use those problem solving skills.

I was privileged to know Fr. Woodward and have him officiate at my wedding. His dedication to the Jesuits and to his students and family was a beacon to all of us. I like to think of him discussing algebra problems now with Erasmus. Eternal light rest upon him.

Father Woodward was my favorite math teacher at Gonzaga College High School. He was such a humble intellectual. I will miss him, but keep his spirit and memory alive.

Fr. Woodward was the most influential teacher in my life, one of the main reasons why I became a teacher myself and then just this year entered the seminary. He was "even-keeled" personified, and every class was the highlight of my day. I'll never forget "Woodie's Goodies," "Factoring is Fun," and KOKO the Gorilla! I was able to visit him this fall, and he was very happy with his life, in excellent spirits, and ready to meet our Lord whenever he might be called. Rest in Peace, Father!

To the Corrigans and the Jesuit community, you have my sympathy and prayers. John was my first cousin once removed and we communicated by Christmas cards over the last many years except for 2012. His always included a lovely short letter. He performed the wedding ceremony for my husband and me in 1966 in NY and when my husband, John, was on the faculty at Gonzaga in 1964-65, they got to know each other as colleagues, not cousins-in-law. When we lived in DC we visited him often at Gonzaga. But for a snowstorm going on now in Richmond, both my husband and I would be in Wernersville tomorrow. Peace to you, John.

Finest teacher I ever had, high school or college. More than that, a fine man & example of a "man for others".

To the Woodward family and friends, please accept my sincere sympathy on the passing of your love one. May the peace of God that excels all thoughts safeguard your hearts in times of deep sorrow Philippians 4:7.

We called him Woody and even among family he was a total gentleman and scholar, which is how everyone would describe him. Possibly the most consistent and unwavering individual I have ever had the pleasure of knowing, much less actually being related to. In his own way, John B. Woodward, S.J. made the world a better place and I am proud to say he was my 2nd cousin.
