JOSEPH FITZMYER

Rev. JOSEPH A. FITZMYER (Age 96)  
Died on Saturday, December 24, 2016 at Manresa Hall, Merion Station, PA. He was son of the late Joseph Fitzmyer and Anna Alexy. In addition to his Jesuit Community, Father is survived by his brother Robert J. Fitzmyer and sister-in-law Marie of Rosemont, PA and many nieces and nephews.  Father was a renowned Professor of Semitic Languages, co-author of The Jerome Biblical Commentary and The New Jerome Biblical Commentary and author of numerous other New Testament publications on the gospel of Luke, The Acts of the Apostles and the Pauline letters. In 1957, he collaborated on the team of scholars, who began to decipher the Qumran scrolls. In addition to teaching at Woodstock College in Maryland for eleven years, he also taught at The University of Chicago, Fordham University, and the Weston School of Theology. He completed his career as Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at Catholic University, where he taught for 22 years. He retired to Manresa Hall in 2011 to undertake his final assignment of praying for the Church and the Society of Jesus.  Visitation at Manresa Hall, 261 City Avenue, Merion Station, PA, on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Additional viewing, St. Matthias Church, 128 Bryn Mawr Avenue, Bala Cynwyd, PA on Thursday morning, January 5 from 9 to 10:15 a.m., followed by his Funeral Mass at 10:30 am.
