Is this the ame Joe Gettier who served in the Peace Corps in Chuuk, Micronesia (then the TTPI) from 1966 - 1968? We were good friends in the Peace Corps and I am sorry - if this is the same person - to learn of his passing. How can I find out?

Joe and I spent many times together from camp Pendleton, Sinai Field Mission, Directing Refugee Resettlement programs and working with AID. Our wives both come from Malaysia and his love of his family is inspirational to me and all who knew him. He leaves a legacy of caring, "can do", and love of the less fortunate. Miss you buddy. Joe and I worked in the provinces in CORDS and its successor progam in MR-III in Viet Nam. He was a good friend, and a notably courageous individual who never thought twice about putting his own life in danger to accomplish his mission....RIP, Joe.

While working with Joe at the Food for Peace office at USAID I was struck by his courage to stand up for what he thought was the right and conviction to fight for it.

Working directly with Joe Gettier while he was on duty with USAID during the liberation of Kuwait was and remains one of the highlights of my career as a U.S. Army Civil Affairs Officer. He exemplified the highest ideals of patriotism of the U.S. Foreign Service.

I am so sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I worked for Joe in the JVA team in the Philippines in the early eighties. Joe touched so many lives through his work and life. I wanted to pass along a very sweet conversation I had in March this year with the conductor on the Amtrack train I took to Philadelphia. Somehow I mentioned that I worked for USAID. He then asked me if I knew Joe Gettier, and when I said I had worked under him in the Philippines, he started to tell me how he served with Joe in Vietnam and with great admiration spoke of Joe as a true hero. His name was Michael Sternfeld and he asked me to pass along greetings.

Peace to Joseph Gettier's family and friends. He was a very good person to know and work with. Despite working with him a short time in 1999-2000, while an analyst with MEA and Food for Peace, I definitely remember his courage to be a voice of reason at our meetings and champion of the end beneficiaries.

Joe's work with and for refugees in Southeast Asia and later in other regions, especially Africa, was not work that made headlines, except in the lives of the individuals and families that were infused with hope because of Joe's advocacy and his actions. He contributed greatly to doing God's work here on earth.
