Joseph Hoffman Obituary

HOFFMAN

JOSEPH BOWYTZ HOFFMAN

On Saturday, December 30, 2023, JOSEPH BOWYTZ HOFFMAN passed away from pancreatic cancer with his loving wife and daughters at his side. Beloved husband of Margery S. Hoffman; devoted father of Ellen Hoffman (David Owens) and Erica Hoffman; dear brother of the late Cynthia Hoffman (Kenneth) Hankin; and loving son of the late Dr. William L. Hoffman and the late Barbara Bowytz Hoffman.

Joe was born on April 3, 1957 in Pittsburgh, PA. Never forgetting his roots, he cheered enthusiastically for Pittsburgh sports teams throughout his life, particularly the Steelers. Joe moved to Maryland to attend UMD, and later GW Law School; or, as Joe would explain it, to "meet Margie."

Joe was a Partner at Kelley Drye and a passionate advocate for his clients. He always made time for his family and many friends. He will be remembered for his involvement in community service, including as a board member of Congregation Beth El and past president of Charles E. Smith Life Communities. Joe was as big as life itself, always actively engaged, available with a ready smile, and keenly interested in making the world a better place. He was an avid road bike rider, swimmer, and Bruce Springsteen fan. He enjoyed spending summers in Ogunquit, Maine, which he called his "happy place." Life was never boring with Joe, and he will be greatly missed by his close family and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Congregation Beth El of Montgomery County, 8215 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD 20814. Interment will follow at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park in Clarksburg, MD. Shiva will be observed at the family's home in Bethesda, MD. The home is open at 7 p.m., with minyan at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. On Friday afternoon, the home is open from 2 to 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Charles E. Smith Life Communities or the National Brain Tumor Society. Arrangements entrusted to TORCHINSKY HEBREW FUNERAL HOME, 202-541-1001.

When I didn´t hear back from Joey after sending him birthday wishes a few days ago I had a sinking feeling. Joey was a forever friend, always thoughtful and always offering advice and support. We met in law school and remained in contact at least once a year. He was a special guy who had a big heart. He always spoke lovingly of his family, his wife and his daughters . He was always happy and grateful for his blessings and his wonderful life. I am so sorry he has passed away, too soon and too young. I send my heartfelt condolences to his loving family ( albeit late) . May his memory be a blessing to all of you .

Wherever Joey was, his energy filled the room. I said to Margie, his presence was larger than life. As "ferocious" as he could be when it was needed, I was more accustomed to the softness and loving side of him. And Joey always made me feel like I was truly valued and loved by him. I´m sure that everyone who was a part of his life, felt the same. What a guy!!

Joe was a wonderful partner, colleague and friend. His welcome, when I joined Kelley Drye, was enthusiastic and memorable and brings a smile to this day.

Very sad to hear of Joe's passing. I worked across the table from Joe on many transactions, and he had the rare combination of being a great attorney and a great person. He will be missed in our industry.

I have no words! I was so shocked and terribly saddened by Joeys passing! I grew up with Cindy and Joey! Their parents were Aunt Barb and uncle Bill...our parents were best friends! It just boggles the mind that they both died so young! May Joeys memory always be for a blessing!

What a terrible loss of such a great human being and friend. I first met Joey in 1979 in our first year Constitutional Law class at GW and have known him ever since. His great wit and sense of humor will live with me forever as will our rekindled friendship in recent years. After his courageous battle, may Joey now truly Rest In Peace. And May Perpetual Light Shine Upon His Soul now and forever. Amen !!!

I was very saddened to read of Joe´s untimely passing. Over the years Joe provided well reasoned and calm legal advice and was always pleasant and easy to work with. Integrity, professionalism, and reliability are also words that come to mind. I trust that his memory will help his family and friends thru this tough time.
